Kind of expected those main draw wildcards but pretty shocked Emily didn't get a wildcard into qualies. She put in good performances at Surbiton this week and has proved her grass court credentials in the past and is clearly one of our top girls on this surface. I have no qualms with Amanda's selection as she really played very well against a class opponent, but if you're handing out wildcards on the basis of current form then Emily definitely deserves one. She shone in qualifying and pushed Morita, a class opponent, really close. In contrast both Annas were disappointing this week and seemed slightly out of their depth on a surface which doesn't really suit their games and I think it's really a year too early for them to be getting tour wildcards when it's only in the past few months that they've even been making inroads into challengers.
I think it's great that the LTA are looking towards the younger players and I hope that the Annas prove me wrong, but I think this is more of a personal snub than anything else.
According to WTAWorld the qualifying draw is out (it is not up on the official website yet though) and is:
(1)FEDAK, Yuliana vs (WC)ELLIOTT, Amanda CHUANG, Chia-Jung vs (16)SOUTH, Melanie
(2)OSTERLOH, Lilia vs (WC)FITZPATRICK, Anna BAKER, Leanne vs (13)OKAMOTO, Seiko
(3)CIBULKOVA, Dominika vs SCHULTZ-MCCARTHY, Brenda LLEWELLYN, Rebecca vs (11)BRANDI, Kristina
(4)LAINE, Emma vs JI, Chunmei LIGGAN, Kelly vs (14)MORITA, Ayumi
(5)KLEPAC, Andreja vs KEEN, Amanda SUN, Shengnan vs (9)ANI, Maret
(6)YUAN, Meng vs (WC)CURTIS, Jade BRENGLE, Madison vs (15)KOPS-JONES, Raquel
(7)GOVORTSOVA, Olga vs PATERSON, Karen BORWELL, Sarah vs (12)O'BRIEN, Katie
(8)CETKOVSKA, Petra vs (WC)KHAN, Natasha SMITH, Anna vs (10)YAN, Zi
An extraordinary number of late pullouts have allowed 11 Brits in - far and away the most I have seen in 11 years of following the tournament. Having another WTA tournament in an attractive venue (Barcelona) probably helped - previously it has been Tashkent or none
Yuan bt Jade Curtis 7-5, 6-4....was really, really close.....Jade had lots of chances, excellent performance against a player ranked so much higher
Govortsova bt Karen Paterson 4-6, 6-4, 6-2....shame after Karen's excellent start but Govortsova is 18, ranked 160 and has been regularly making latter stages of 50Ks
Sarah B and Katie are locked in epic combat...after nearly 2 hours, Sarah leads 7-6, 5-7, 4-3* tho there have been so many fluctuations in this one, will surely be more to come....Sarah was a break down in the 3rd
Anna Fitzpatrick has taken 1st set 7-5 against Lilia Osterloh. Osterloh is ranked 117, has been as high as 41 !!! and she beat Amanda K 3 and 3 in Surbiton. Great stuff from the Sheffield teenager
Sarah failed to take the match then. katie's serving at 67 75 56 and 40-0 takes the game with an ace. tiebreak to decide the match. could go either way.
Amanda broke back again, now serving to hold the break at *3-2

Sarah won 75 in the tiebreak. Couldn't have asked for a closer match there.
Amanda has lost the break again and is currently serving to draw level at *3-4. And just got broken. 3-5*
Fitzpatrick/Osterloch has just had a very long break which must have been for an injury, hopefully not to Anna who has come back and served a love game to trail 2-4* in the second set, still only one break.
Mel South about to start playing.
