Liverpool Exhibition

From tournament website:

"There was disappointment for another Liverpool star of the future in the Women's qualifying final. 14-year-old Amy Askew was beaten 6-2, 6-0 in blistering sunshine by Liz Thomas. The 22-year-old from Blackburn now goes into the WTA players' event. She will face Ashkey Harkleroad in the opening match on day two, Wednesday June 13th."

Good on Liz for qualifying for this exhibition event. She will probably find herself out of her depth but it's a good chance for her to play against the experienced Harkleroad as well as up and coming players: Wozniaki, Hofmanova, Cibulkova etc.

Her match against Ashley Harkleroad is at 11am on wednesday.

There was some re-scheduling and Liz played her first of 3 matches today.

Nikola Hofmanova (AUT) bt Elizabeth Thomas 7-5, 7-6(2)

Hofmanova is only ranked 1082 at the moment, but is at a career high of 5 in juniors. Liz pushed her and so did as well as can be expected really. She will play Harkleroad and Cibulkova later this week.

You can listen to Liz's matches live at http://www.liverpooltennis.co.uk

It was an excellent performance yesterday, she saved several set pts at 5-6 yesterday but Hofmanova eventually clinched the 1st set with an ace. 2nd set was equally close

Liz is no mug at all on grass....in rd1 of the wc playoff last year she had 2 match pts against Naomi Cavaday in rd1 before Naomi fought back to win in 3

I've just checked and Liz has taken the 1st set 6-4 against Ashley Harkleroad jawdrop.gifjawdrop.gif

It's currently 4-4 in the 2nd. She led *4-3 with the break and had pts for 5-3 but Harkleroad broke back

Liz is ranked 743, Harkleroad is ranked 72...it's the biggest upset win for a British girl for a long time !

pity there's no ranking points in Liverpool.

Are they trying to get it sanctioned by ATP and WTA coz they should. Its a good set up and a great city and I could go every year!

Well done Liz Thomas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! clap.gif

The problem is the scheduling. Liverpool and Boodles could have been Tour events but the ATP/WTA won't allow a country to have two events in the same week.

I don't know if there's a rule, though. I have seen two Futures being played in the same country in the same week.

you make an excellent point. Maybe if they ever do push Wimby backa week it could happen...

Chris Llewlleyn pushed Rusedski pretty close as well
