South vrs Sugiyama (could have been better!)
K O'Brien vrs S Kloesel (Not bad)

im being positive. Bally got a good chance against Srebotnik, remember she beat her at the AO 2003, when she was a qualifier!smile.gif Cavaday also got a good chance against Hingis, considering Martina hasnt played on grass since Wimbledon last year and that she coming back from an injury so will be rusty. South v Sugiyama is an ok 1st match, Sugiyama not having the best season so far. But i rate O'Brien's match as a great chance of getting to the 2nd round, but i hope she's not over confidence because from her reports she very positive and just hope she doesnt feel under pressure to perform. biggrin.gif

Katie is my pick to win. I would be seriously suprised if any of the others won.

I'm not counting them out but its not likely. Mel,Bally and Naomi could win Anne no chance.

Have to agree it's a bad draw for our girls
with the exception of Katie.

Anne k will have no chanceagainst Jankovic.buggered.gif
Mel and Bally could maybe pull off a upset.please.gif

Naomi is the interesting one I feel.
She could lose easily to Hingis or then again
given her improvement, she could go and cause
a big upset.thumbsup.gif

In all though it has to be said that we could easily
see no british girls in Rd 2. The press will slate them
all as usual, but we know that the girls are improving.
They will give their best I'm sure. hmm

I think Mel has the best chance of getting through the first round.

It's a tough draw but we can't really complain. Katie, Mel and Elena got the luck of the draw in Eastbourne (especially Elena whose first opponent retired, expected second was stuck in Birmingham, third knackered after a 3 hour marathon - and then drew Anne rather than Peer or Radwanska!) and took advantage. Anne was overdue a tough Wimbledon draw, after avoiding seeds for 6 years, and Naomi has a wonderful draw. Playing one of the all-time greats is a much more valuable experience at her stage of career than a winnable match (not that she is without hope of winning, however unlikely, given Martina's uncertain fitness and commitment).

Elena did defeat Srebotnik in the 2005 Australian Open, which should give her confidence, but does also mean that she does not have the normal advantage for Brits at Wimbledon of unfamiliarity to their opponents

After the luck of the Eastbourne draw, this is the reverse.

It will be a big event if they manage one R2 place. Not impossible, but they are underdogs in every game-by quite some way in all but one case.

Naomi vs Hingis could be interesting. I think it is 6 months too soon for Naomi, but she relishes a challenge, and does have a habit of sometimes proving you wrong.....
