LTA Summer County Cup

I cant see this mention elsewhere but in case anyone is wondering where all the Brits are this week, many are playing 'county matches' see County Matches all groups
As would be expected from The LTA their website shows only detailed results of group 1 furious see Results - group 1 only

A look at this group only will reveal many familiar names, both old and new!

So that's where they are all hiding!

Disappointed to see Derbyshire were relegated last year and now lie in Group 2.

Does anyone know if you can find out who's playing, outside of Group 1?

Jonny will be playing here till Wednesday, then flies to Brazil Thursday I believe.

Apparently quite a 'social' occasion is County week, enjoyed by lots of the players.

I may go and have a look at Ladies Group 3 tomorrow as it's about 5 mins from where I live...no idea who will be playing though

Top secret I am afraid! What makes it annoying is that they must have all the details logged somewhere - I say give them to Steven then we would have tons of stats - win to loss ratios, predictions for young players vs old players etc. etc. smile

Yes, from what I understand this is one of the highlights of the year for many.

No ranking points at stake, and it's doubles, so you'll be lucky evileye ... though if the results found their way to me (or anyone else on here) you would at least get the results published somewhere that people could read them.

As you say, the weird thing is that they must keep similar records for the other groups, so why not post them in the same way as the G1 results?

By the way, I assume they don't play these matches flat out - three 3-setters per day every day is quite a lot of tennis, even if it is doubles!

The county cup full rules are Here

They seem quite strict in some regards and I cant help wondering if they are restricting support by "Banners and advertising literature relating to Team/County sponsors must NOT appear within the Tennis Ground during the Championships."

I'm glad that the LTA are giving this some publicity. Anyone know how much money you get from this?

Good to see Devon are up into group 3 this year, and have made a decent start to by winning both their opening matches.

There's normally a bit of coverage in the local paper here on how Devon do, but haven't got today's yet, and as there's nothing on the website, they may not be covering it, at least yet.

Couldn't tell you who was playing for Devon though....

I took a spin to the west coast of Norfolk today, yes Hunstanton does really face due west!

At this group 3 event were several familiar faces - Josh Goodall, Burnham Arlidge,Graham Dyce, Josh Milton, Ian Flanagan and from the past Tom Po****, Chris Lewis and Pete Russell (Bloomers Coach) to name a few.

The most notable thing was the total lack of umpires, linesmen, etc., with only one official to cover all 10 courts and yet no one came to blows! I did see one racket hurled into the net from 10 feet away in anger and one ball knocked through the trees into a neighbouring field but generally it seemed quite a sociable and friendly event, all players enjoying themselves representing their respective counties.

It seemed very well organised and conditions were perfect - hot and sunny with a refreshing breeze and the courts looked pretty good as well, especially for public courts. Scores were being published in the clubhouse and not kept secret!

An interesting day, maybe tomorrow I will visit Cromer on the north coast - a group 2 event and see who is there.

Oh, just remembered a notable fashion feature - Josh Milton had a 'Bloomers style' florescent lime green shirt which stood out from all of the ordinary ones.

Edit - deleted teams which were those at East mosely of course

No officials? confused.gif I wasn't aware that they played without officials in the lower tiers! That can get vey dangerous, I guess.

Anyway, glad that you went and enjoyed the tennis. smile.gif

Neil Harman's written an article on the county cup... but perhaps the most interesting thing from him comes in the final paragraph, where he says that Colin Fleming is re-embarking on his professional career next week

That is great news. omg.gif I've always thought that he would come back after the success that Jamie had.

I wonder if he will play doubles only or a mix? I guess he should get a wild card into Ilkley.

Oh that is good news smile - I hope he's coming back for singles as well as doubles, because he was looking like he might turn into quite a decent singles player - in fact, he's the last Brit to beat Nielsen before the Dane started off on his 23-match Brit-bashing streak!

When I saw his first winning results in the County Cup, I did wonder wonder whether it might indicate a comeback. Very pleased to add another player to the list.
