Nice experience to get Maria in the second round , not so nice to get her in the first. Only crumb of comfort I can come up with is that she doesn't seem to enjoy playing the up and coming youngsters. Fancy Bally strongly against Hampton assuming Dallas doesn't take too much out of her. Scheepers played better last week but is still a very attractice looking opponent for Anne. Anne loves this tournie so I am very hopeful for this match as well.
Unbelievable year of Grand Slam draws for Bally and Anne, with Scheepers at 82 the highest either of them has had to face in round 1. For Bally to make the best of her draw she could use losing to Rezai tonight - players who go deep unusually for them in the week before Grand Slams often struggle the following week - the conditions in Dallas make that more likely.
Heather cannot complain as it is her first tough Grand Slam draw, and should be helpful experience of pitting her wits against a top player on a big court
Heather goes into this tournament with her new coach. The first I've heard of it. Seems to have some good credentials.
Watson sounds happy when we talk as she always does and is full of enthusiasm about the changes in her life, including her new coach, former world No 78 Mauricio Hadad from Colombia Sharapovas former mentor.
Mauricio is my new coach. He's based half of the time Florida and half in Colombia, where he has an academy. Ive known him since I came to the Bollettieri Academy when I was 12. I used to have private lessons with him. But he left after three years. But I called him to see if he wanted to work with me
'We started about six weeks ago. Hes very calm. I dont work well with people who scream in my face because I wont listen. Hes very smart. And hes going to come to England to train with me after the US Open. Hes teaching me some Spanish so he speaks it to me all the time. Im getting a lot better.
