What are the chances of a good Aussie run getting Mel into top 200?? She needs to be at GS Q level again, shes too good not to be.

Quite a tough ask.

Most of Mel's current 227 ranking points come from her 9 tournaments down under from September through to early December last year.  She will be defending 138 points from these tournaments.

Those 138 all come from 25Ks, with 3 semi finals, 3 quarters and 3 last 16s ( she has one last 32 exit not counting ).

I don't know if she intends to play so many again this year, but if she did it would mean ( on current rankings ) going from 138 points from 9 tournaments to 195 points from 9 tournaments ( and hence an overall total of 284 points ).

That said, if she could refind her best form and given the general Aussie fields, that would certainly not be impossible.

Both opponents have been ranked a fair bit higher - Calderwood reached a career high of 607 in 2008 and Hubacek a CH of 460 last year.

Excellent! Thanks for your reply Indiana, it makes sense that Mel is defending a lot; I was very surprised she was that close to the top 200 considering how poor she has been. I really hope she gets her confidence back. I see no reason why she cant be joining Naomi in the rankings and start progressing with her.

Nice wins for both girls, yes imperative that Mel can get her ranking high enough to get back playing GS qualies, and picking up cheap points is defo a good strategy. I just wish her base playing level would rise which would mean when/if she gets back into the top 200 she would be competitive at that level.

Mel: "Week one - hurt my arm and had to pull out during my quarter final match. Hoping it will be better after a couple days rest"

What an unfortunate start to the trip
