Week 2 - WTA ($220K) Hobart, Australia - Hard

QR1: Heather Watson WR 92 v (wc) Bojana Bobusic (AUS) WR 241

(q3) Alberta Brianti (ITA) WR 70 and (q8) Kristina Barrois (GER) WR 91 are the seeds in Heather's section - which means she missed out on a seeding by 1.

Even more unlucky is Naomi Broady, who missed out on a place in qualifying by 2 places last week, 3 places here. cry

Elena will be in the main draw.

Good to see that Heather has recovered from her injury, hopefully it didn't have an impact on her fitness too much.

Naomi in Oz qualies, so would have had to withdraw once she had qualified anyway.
Very decent draw for Heather, injury hopefully not going to be an issue.

Come on Hev and Bally!

Good chance for Hev to recoup some of the points dropping off after Auckland and for Bally to break back into the top 50. Maybe even get past a WTA quarter final for the first time.

Not really - I believe sign-in for women's qualifying at the AO is not until Wednesday.

Will be interesting to see how Heather goes here. Last year she started brilliantly, but it did take her a while to get back into form after her injury at the end of the season.

I think Heather is a player who thrives on match practice so hopefully she will win at least a couple of matches here to set her up for the Australian open

If only Naomi was ranked a few places higher.  Really hope that she now gets a decent Aussie Open qualifying draw.

40 points for a QR1 win would be very nice, but one match and 2 points for a loss wouldn't be much for a few weeks down under.

Ah right I thought it was maybe Monday. Still though playing two different tournaments in the same week does seem a bit strange. Naomi would effectively just be using Hobart as match practice for Melbourne.

... which is exactly what she wanted, judging by her tweets this week.

The Hobart qualifying has a load of folk that are down for Aussie Open qualifying, basically, apart from the Hobart qualifying WCs, all those that aren't already into the Aussie Open main draw.

Quite normal before slams, maybe more so early in the season before Aussie Open qualifying.
