On the grounds that occasionally someone does something quite extraordinary that seems to merit attention but doesn't fit into any other thread, would the mods be all right with this as a thread?
If so, may I nominate Gilles Simon as a worthy opener? A few days ago, he was on crutches and the assumption seemed to be that he would pull out. He's now 6 all in the fifth set with WR 59, Daniel Brands.
(Edit: I thought they did 5th set tiebreakers here. They don't. He must wish they did.)

Everyone has their (foreign) favourites who stand out for one reason or another and it's nice to be able to point out their exploits but you never really know where to put it . . .
Good thinking :)
(and, yes, a sneaking 'allez' for Gilles, his physio/doctor is NOT very happy seemingly but Gilles says it's suddenly fine and, five sets in, he must be right).
Just to complete the thought, Simon won 16-14. The last set alone was 115 minutes. And if you go onto Twitter and type "Gilles" into the search box, the tweets (in French, English and every other language under the sun) are admiring and often very funny.
Oh, and while we're at it - Kokkinakis, 17 and in the 2nd round?

The ones from BOTBers who believed the rubbish about him withdrawing aren't so nice
Very frustrating that Brands fluffed 7 match points - at one point, he was only 2/22 on bps.

What is it about the Aussie Open and Simon winning insane 5 set matches that he has no right to win. Last year he had that epic against Monfils where he could barely stand for much of the final set yet somehow came through.
Monfils was in the stands this time at the end, having just about (I think - though I wasn't following the timings that closely) started and finished his match with Ryan Harrison during the course of Simon's match.
Just noticed that Mr Simon, is at it again. Into a 5th set against Marin Cilic. Perhaps when he plays, they should forget about the first 4 sets and just arrange a one set shoot out.
Gilles Simon went on to win in 5 sets again, but perhaps the most notable performance of the day has come from Spaniard Bautista Agut who has taken out Delpo, also in 5 sets.
I think I like the one-set shootout idea better than the one that came in from a French wag, who said that M. Simon had put in a request to the ITF that GS matches be extended to seven sets. Two five-set matches on a bad ankle in 40+ heat. Crazy.
While we're at it, those Aussie youngsters are something, no? Not content with having a young woman who made three GS doubles finals in her 16th/17th year, they now have a 17 year old who can look respectable against Nadal and an 18 year old who's extending a seed to 5 sets in the second round of a Slam. Not bad.
