I watched most of the match, in increasing disbelief. He must crumble soon - Rafa always comes through in the end - but no: this young man Kyrgios was incredible. Beating the world no. 1 in only your second GS, when you only got in as a wild card! "Well done" seems far too tame an accolade.
I could hardly believe how composed Nick Kyrios was especially at the end.. He made a few silly errors but would then immediately serve an ace as if it hadn't affected him at all. Might actually help him that he has to play again tomorrow, he won't have much time to think about it.
Oh, yes. Surprised, but not wholly surprised. At least not since the 9 match points saved against Gasquet. But what a way to announce yourself on the world stage!
PS: WHO does the BBC's background research? Just watched on I-player and kept hearing people commenting that this was just Kyrgios' second Grand Slam. No, it was his fifth: Paris WC in 2013, beat Stepanek, lost to Cilic; US Open 2013, qualified, lost to Ferrer; Australia WC 2014, beat Becker, lost to Paire (the one they did know about); Paris WC in 2014, lost to Raonic (just a little relevant); and now Wimbledon. Come on, people.
Yes, I heard that more than once from the BBC yesterday and foolishly believed them. Very poor !!!
Sometimes I do realise when they get tennis stuff wrong. I presume similar rubbish spills out about sports / other subjects that I know much less about.
Thoughts and best wishes to Victoria Duval and her family.
The 17 year-old, who came through the qualies and then won her first round in the Wimbledon main draw, beating the 29th seed, has just been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.
I second that CD, I was really shocked to read it in the papers this morning. Victoria and her family have already had more than their fair share of dramas, with being held hostage by gunmen during a burglary and having her father caught in the dreadful earthquake in Haiti. I hope the outcome of her treatment is as successful as it seems to have been for Ross H.
And apparently knew that she had it before she played some of her matches - certainly before the MD ones. A grounded and brave young woman. Thoughts and prayers with her - and glad to hear that it's been caught early and contained.
Given that incidence of Hodgkins in the UK is 2.5 per 100,000 for women and 3.4 for men, and non-Hodgkins is 18.2 and 22.3, that's quite a surprising number of top tennis players (players in top 200 singles/doubles) over the past few years.
Big shout out to 17yo Alex Zverev - just thrashed Robin Haase 0&2 for this first main tour win.
That win will take him to the brink of the top 250.
Injury-permitting, but I will be amazed if this kid doesn't win a Grand Slam one day. In my view the current crop breaking through - Zverev, Kyrgios, Coric and a couple of others - are easily the biggest prospects since Nadal, Djokovic and Murray burst on to the scene.

First main tour singles win ... made the doubles QFs in Stuttgart last week, playing with Michael Berrer. Did a double-take when I was looking up the doubles results last week and saw that ... couldn't quite believe it.

And then goes on to beat fifth seed Mikhail Youhzny in straights 7-5,7-5.

Good Lord - Hope Kyrgios is not the second coming of Mark Phillipousis who is going to end up with a lot of injuries. Perhaps Kyrgios won't have this sort of playboy image that the later had, which I always thought didn't help Phillipousis much. But well done Zverev - the sport needs new stars.

And now is into the QFs having taken out Giraldo. Have only seen him play once - the AO juniors final - and thought it was among the best junior tennis I'd seen. Great serve, heavy shots, good placement. Didn't really anticipate this, though!
