Hi guys, I'm very new to the forum...but I wanted to reach out to everyone who follows & plays in the world of tennis to start an interesting discussion. I'm seeking information on the professional game, of course for our UK players, but also for tracking amateur matches in local parks & clubs.
I'm very keen on developing a new iOS tennis app in the coming months and I therefore wanted to open up this post to see what you guys and gals... as users, players & enthusiasts would find useful, when playing amateur or following professional tennis games on your mobile devices. I do hope I have posted this in the appropriate board.
There are plenty of semi-successful apps out there but my initial thoughts are:
- Player Matching / Finding Hitting Partners
- Scoring & Collecting Detailed Statistics
- Live Professional Matches & Interactive Scoring
So, 4 initial questions to stimulate some discussion:
Which are your favourite current apps?
What do you think is good about those existing apps?
What would you like to see improved?
What is it that you would like to see that does not exist currently?
From a personal point of view, I wanted to develop an app that brings you results of ALL the British players. And I mean ALL of them. Resultina does a great job so far, but I'm talking Grand Slams to Grass Roots - so, in essence, ATP/WTA, ITF Futures, AEGON British Tour (and below), ITF Juniors, Tennis Europe... You could favourite certain players or just ask the app to send you all the results involving British players - essentially, it would be the ultimate scoring and results app for British Tennis fans. Resultina is great, and I like their format, but because they provide results for all nationalities, they can't go as deep as I would like.
I don't play, so I've not really thought about an app to help players find opponents.
I have contacts at Universal Tennis as well, so it might be cool to have Universal Tennis Ratings beside each player in a match-up.
Like I say, I have several ideas that I've been thinking of but no expertise with which to put them into practice. I'd be really interested to hear from you.
For sure we can speak offline so I'll reach out to you this evening. Sounds like a simple but valuable concept and yes it is surprising that there are not a lot of apps out there that feature this functionality.
- The ATP/WTA app looks good for matches but not sure you can follow players like you say. - The We Are Tennis app is probably the closest thing to what you had in mind, I would say. But it has limitations, being quite slow and also having to follow players individually. - TennisTV is good but from what I see (as I'm without a subscription) you only get the scores & the link to their match if available on TV. + I'm sure there are more, just not got them saved on my phone like the scoring trackers I mentioned.
In any new app... I would love to make countries (& bulk following) easily accessible and followable like you say, but if I am to integrate that into the amateur games and matches... I will need to be careful to not provide too much detail or too many screens & complexity. So on that, I'm a little interested in what sort of statistics you would like to see, whether its just the match scores you're interested in or also the 1st Serve % etc. At the moment I had a spidergraph in mind, comparing both opponents stats, rather than the traditional bar graphs (as it's more visual and takes up less space on screen). Thoughts?

I'm part of the Tweener Tennis team. You can use our smartphone app to find players nearby and it also caters for LTA Grade 6 matchplays in local leagues/competitions we organise or one off matches that the user organises. We have an internal ranking system, internal messaging, a leaderboard and it also displays your British Tennis rating. Other similar apps include Find A Player and Tennis Buddy, I believe ClubSpark are actively developing a competitions app too for the LTA. The problem with any of these apps, is that you can develop them relatively easily and inexpensively, however the major problem is to get a sufficient amount of users. We have around 1000 users on Tweener but it's slow going and hard work to attract more users. With any app I think it's imperative to have a clear budget and strategic plan to get users onboard.
What I have thought about and briefly discussed with the LTA before is including all the pro results on the British Tennis Results page, because every British player has a BTM number. This could be an interactive database of every British player's results, it already includes most amateur players. You could then add a head-2-head facility and some other cool stuff and it would be amazing. I can spend hours on this site the way it is just now. You can search back in time to see detailed match results, like how our now professional players got on in the junior ranks etc. If I am playing someone in a tournament, or a player has entered one of my tournaments, I can check out who they have played before, recent results, county doubles league results etc. It's easy to keep up with old friends results too.
I've also been loving Brad's twitter updates and another thing I was keen on with that type of stuff is to create the largest private tennis-related email list in the UK. I was thinking it could be a weekly email containing info on pro results but also local updates such as aegon team tennis and junior comps, some general tennis news and also offer advertising to competition organisers like myself or tennis product sales people.
This app helps you to find tennis players around you. And you can also promote yourself or tennis related business among our users who are tennis players
We want to gather players from all around the world
to make easy to find players to play with anywhere or anytime!
