Boys: Junior Nationals 2018 (U12/U14/U16/U18) - Week 34

The Nationals main draws start tomorrow with, as is increasingly the case in recent years, only the lower age groups attracting most of the top players. The under 12s are at Bournemouth and the rest at Nottingham. Draws:

Our trio who reached the U12 Summer Cup semis all progressed for the loss of 2 or 3 games.

Lui Maxted looking good in both 14's and 16's. Seems a long time ago he was in squad with my son! (he was 2 years younger to be fair)

Know what you mean, seagull - one of the boys my son used to play with a lot is now ATP top 500 ! As you say, to be fair, the other lad nearly always won when they played but it was always close

BOYS U14 semis:

[1] Lui Maxted v [3] Matt Rutter

Yujiro Onuma v [4] Oliver Tarvet

Yujiro beat the second seed in a third-set TB

BOYS U18 semis:

[1] Joseph Newman-Billington v [3] Dan Martin

[5] Jake Hersey v Dan Siddall

The U16s are still at the QF stage. Just to note that it's true that many top players don't play this event but I often see it on the Bio of US college players and national champion is national champion (or blinkin' well should be !).

Lui picked up both U14 titles but came unstuck in the U16s. Hugo Coquelin was untroubled throughout the under 12s (he is a 2005 though, unlike most of the others)

Doubles winners (1) Coquelin/Diack

U14 F:

[1] Lui Maxted d. Yujiro Onuma 6-1 6-3
Doubles winners (2) Groom/Maxted

U16 semis

(WC) Harry Lazell d. (3) Lui Maxted 6-3 6-1
(7) Barney FitzPatrick d. (5) Alex Solonenko 6-2 6-3

U18 F:

I wasn't there but I always think it's pretty feeble and mean-spirited to retire in (effectively) the very last game. Especially in a final. Unless you were lying on the ground, unable to walk, Jake, you should have played four more balls, and let Dan have his moment, he'd earned it.

Unfortunately another retirement in the under 16 final (albeit not one game from the end). Still both combined yesterday to claim the doubles title

U16 F

(WC) Harry Lazell d. (7) Barney FitzPatrick 6-1 rtd

Doubles winners FitzPatrick/Lazell

I agree with the general sentiments re such retirements.

And as for Jake I note that he has secured a qualifying WC to the Mallorca Challenger and is scheduled to play on Sunday.
