Main draw is out. Interesting second quarter with four qualifiers and a wild card to go with Sakkari [4], Cornet [6] and Parmentier

 An interesting case. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/13394586

Apparently the family moved to Australia for "business and lifestyle" reasons, but offered the LTA the opportunity to continue to fund her. The family appear then to have been disappointed when the LTA declined.

You never know with  Naiktha Bains what will happen in the future(i.e. Jo Konta in reverse) but at the age of 21 she is yet to have much  impact on world singles rankings.

You generally do seem to get more opportunities in Australia if you are in and around the 250-300 mark with the additional ITF events, often played at convenient times of the year (for home progression). There's also the reciprocal WC situation. I was thinking would Issy Wallace ever think of switching back, but then she qualified for the FO last year by winning the play-off and was also part of the recent field which 250odd Kimberley Birrell won to guarantee her Melbourne ticket, so if you were on the fence, for a career progression POV, it may be more worth your while staying put.

Heather (and Wallace) have had a big reprieve. If Hev beats Baines, she will face either Wallace or an alt, instead of Q1 Mona Barthel who has been moved to the main draw.

Katie would also have a winnable FQR if she comes through her opener. She's due to face Sorribes Tormo who isn't as strong outside of clay, despite her Auckland QF showing this week.

Heather is first match on Centre Court, at 12:00 UK time, and Katie is second match on West Court.
Hope that alt spot goes to a local girl, rather than someone higher ranked looking for match practice !

This is a massive week for Hev so I really hope the revised scheduling gives her the chance to qualify and then make some progress in the main draw. Failure to do so will see a huge slide down the rankings so she really must makes the most of this break. Hopefully Hobart will be good for her again.

Bains holds to love, so *3-1.

Issy Wallace plays Sabrina Santamaria, a better doubles player, currently ranked 593. Hev will never have a better chance to qualify for a WTA draw. I'm not sure how many points you get for a Q1 win, but good opportunity for Wallace to pick up a win as well.

Anyone know what the status is with the Aussies playing in quals here? The Aussie Open MDWCs have been announced and the prime candidates for the QWCs are playing this week, so if they do well here, are they effectively ruling themselves out of their home grand slam?

Watson now broken to 30. 3-2*

One point for playing, 12 for a win, and 18 for qualifying.
