Week 2 - Australian Open women's qualifying - hard

Naomi's flight from HK was worth taking after all (in financial terms at least, she'll need a win to make it worth it in points terms). If only Katy hadn't withdrawn ...

QR1: Gabriella Taylor WR 189 v Kristie Ahn (USA) WR 210 (CH 105 last Jan)

QR1: Katie Swan WR 181 v (q4) Bianca Andreescu (CAN) WR 107 (=CH)

H2H 1-1, both in 2015 in junior Grade 1 QFs - Katie won 3&1 at Roehampton then Bianca won in 3 sets in Repentigny.

Rubbish draw but hopefully the Canadian will be at least a little tired after reaching the final in Auckland.

QR1: (q21) Harriet Dart WR 132 v Chloé Paquet (FRA) WR 224 (CH 194 in 2017)

H2H 1-0 - Harriet won convincingly, 0 & 3, in the semi-finals in Altenkirchen last February, on her way to the title.

QR1: Naomi Broady WR 257 v Ysaline Bonaventure (BEL) WR 158 (CH 116 in Jul)

H2H 1-1 - Naomi won 4&5 in Glasgow in 2015 but lost 4&3 in Astana in 2017.

Some opportunities there. Pleased Naomi snuck in, she's had a torrid time of late.

Yep, some interesting ties. Would hope for 2 wins there realistically.

Apparently Naomi was the final entry as someone in the main draw withdrew allowing Vickery to move into that, so Katy would have pushed Naomi out had she not withdrawn - not sure who would be most likely to pick up a win given current form. I'd probably lean towards Naomi.

The last one in??? That's great

And supposedly the Aussie Open is such a great event for the players, with so much laid on for them, even at quali level, and all travel paid (even for quali players, I believe). Thrilled to see four of our players in the qualis as of right (and - apart from Naomi, which is debatable anyway - not ones who 'should' be in the main draw and are on the way down but those on the way up).

I'm not sure I agree.  With the way she's been playing for the last few months I really can't see Naomi beating Bonaventure, whereas Katy loves playing in Australia and it might have been a good opportunity for her to get her season going (despite her recent record which I am aware of).  However that's all irrelevant as Naomi travelled and Katy didn't so best of luck to her and I really hope she proves me wrong.

Gutted for Katie Swan thats a stinker of a draw but they know each other well.

To be honest, I think both would struggle to make an impact and both are badly out of form, but it was just the serve which made me differentiate them. I echo the good luck to Naomi and wish her well.

Gabi is 4th on Court 14, so probably looking at circa 5am for that. She is a slight 4/6 favourite to beat Ahn who has had a very poor 2018.
Naomi is 4th on Court 13, so looking at a similar time. She is 7/4 underdog
Harriet is 5th on Court 13, immediately after Naomi. She is 1/5 fave, so a great chance, but she was obviously underdog in her 3 Brisbane qual matches, and odds are just odds.

Looks like Katie will be early hours of Tuesday which is a shame for her perspective, but obviously fairer on Bianca.

Matches start at 11pm UK (an hour earlier than the main draw the following week), so I will be looking to watch the first matches to a conclusion.

I'm new to Eurosport Player - Anyone have a clue about how you can tell which screen is covering which court? Some of them seem to be to practice courts. If I wake up at 3.30 to watch I don't want to be trying a dozen different screens to find court 14 or 13, Maybe I'm just being dim!!!

Well, Conny P (not British but a 'connected person') gets a win 5-1 retired.

You can't as of yet. Often starts like this at the start of the main draw and everyone kicks offs on Twitter and they fix it, but can't see too many raising it for quals in the early hours unfortunately. There's certainly not all 13 matches available either.
