Two of the grass and hard court titans of the game meet up and this time it is on clay - as Indy predicted!
So what are their records on clay?
Roger has won 20 slam titles in total with 1 win and 3 losing finals in Paris, between 2006 and 2009. His overall record on Paris clay is 70-17 which is around an 80% W/L record.
Pete never won Paris, he managed a semifiinal in 1996, and mustered 14 slam titles in total. His W/L record on Paris clay was 24-13 or around 65%.
The two have played once, at Wimbledon in an epic in 2001, last 16, when Federer prevailed in a changing of the guard moment.
Neither are at home on this surface and it could be fun - like Bambi on ice perhaps or is that unfair!
I forgot to mention, Pete Sampras famously won the Davis Cup Final in Russia on Clay ( i think it was a final, may have been earlier) but took out the Russians to prove his creds! 1995 it was and he beat Chesnokov in the opening rubber in 5 sets, and then despatched Kafelnikov (a former slam winner of course ) to take the title - worth mentioning I feel!
So this poll is closed now and Federer destroyed Sampras on clay by 12 votes to 2. What a performance by the Fed-Express and into the final to play Borg or Laver.
