L28: Egor Gerasimov (BLR) WR 83 defeated (WC) Andy Murray WR 121 by 7-6(8) 6-1
Call it a day, Andy! You've carved out your unique place in British tennis history & more than earned your rest.
Why should be give up? Because he lost? Because he might never be as good again? So what?
He knows he's got his place in history, he knows his bank balance, it's not a question of 'earning his rest', he obviously doesn't want to 'rest'. And why should he?
THere are lots of top players out there who are past their prime. But who continue because they obviously love the challenge of the sport. And that's what made them top players in the first place. I think it's great that their misplaced pride and fear of public opinion doesn't force them to quit.
For about the first time I wouldn't be disappointed if he was to fairly soon call it a day. But of course it is up to Andy, and if he just wants to play as long as he can then fair dos.
Some folk have consistently underestimated his desire to continue playing on the tour if he can. Personally I think it's ATP tour results, including Slams, that it will probably come down to, in that if he isn't winning some matches there this just might be his last season.
Andy showed he needed matches with his loss on the other Sunday. He pulled out of the following weeks challenger but if its matches he needs, why not go though qualies?
Just to be clear, I'd be perfectly happy if he quit.
And I really hope he doesn't aggravate his hip (or whatever) by playing at high level when he shouldn't.
But I love having players like Robredo or Simon or Verdasco still giving it a go - and Andy too, if he can, and wants

I agree I love seeing those older players giving it a go but Andy is different I feel - a) he is a genuine champ, a 3 time slam winner and ex #1 who has been at the top of the game and there is a difference between giving it a go and it becoming cringeworthy too watch - it isnt the latter yet and I guess we all hope it doesnt become the latter. I think we remember Antwerp and hope he can still get back to that level or near b) he tends to be someone that doesnt know his limits, always pushing and going with his emotions, I feel, and I don't want him to get back into yet another injury cycle and just keep on trying.
I hope he hasnt hurt himself again today, lots of tweets suggesting his back was in some discomfort, just hope he is ok and also knows his limits.
But whilst he gives it a go, still, (and I hope we see him for one last Wimbledon run at least, and I hope maybe more) I am sure we will all support him, he is our best player ever and certainly the best of our times
Yes Im in the Andy should retire camp. Does he really want to be travelling the world barely competing especially in the current climate with a young family. He doesnt need the money has won everything or been in the final of every Slam and been number one in the world. It hurts more seeing him beaten by guys that wouldnt have got a set off him 4 of 5 years ago than it does him not playing.
Further to add, one last Wimbledon swansong this year. Im about 99% certain he wont be playing tennis is 2022. Same with Serena as well, her last year too.
I'm in the retire soon camp as Andy now loses to players he used to beat or players I'm not familiar with. He's on a 4 match losing streak on ATP main tour events. Surely he is punishing his body for what?

Andy loves tennis! I respect his passion & commitment. Even now young & lower ranked players are being given opportunities to play against one of the greats. He is not at his best, but his opponents know that & still have to fight for every point. I can't see Djokovic giving back to the sport in the same way. Also let's not forget, he has carried the huge weight of expectation of the nation and overcome incredible odds against injury. By doing so he has earned the right to decide when and how HE ends his playing career. Wimbledon would be a special & memorable stage for a national hero. Let him play while he can (you're a long time dead).
