I would think probably that. Travelling the world, playing professional sport. If that ticks his sporting and general life interests more than other things and he is able to do it, frankly why on earth not?

While no doubt he would like to be more successful, it certainly doesn't just have to be about winning tennis matches.

Exactly - theres been plenty of similar players over the years, Robert Dee a famous example who just lost and lost and lost but keep on going. Greg Howe was close to this, never going to make it big but enjoyed playing and used all his spare cash and time For a couple of famous years, name checking our board in his book!

Yes he can play a bit but I would say that is quite a lucky ranking and a number of clearly bought wild cards do leave a sour taste in the mouth.

Anyway, it's definitely not true - Matt James is on this board - he'd give him a run for his money (in fact, sorry, Elb but I'd put my money on Matt smile )

(also, I agree with Wolf - a ranking doesn't make one 'capable' at this level - if you play a whole heap of events, with wildcards into the main draw into a lot of them, you're almost certain to get a win or two, here or there)

And you are right (as is Wolf). I think my main point was if he enjoys it, it is his call and probably explains why he does it. Whether it is right to buy wild cards (if that is what happens) , then that is a whole big debate!

Where is Elbert from, I cant find a county or birthplace in searching the internet, presumably down South somewhere (one of the websites he is mentioned in implies a link to Cobham area?)

Oh, don't get me wrong, absolutely no criticism of Barr for playing and giving it a go, whatever his aspirations and interests - go for it, lad - my comment was simply about the level you were implying and that paulisi said regarding his ranking.

I get a lot of abuse on occasion when Ive referred to players as backpacker players who in essence are not professional players and who are playing because they have the opportunity to be it through work, travel or parents who can financial back them, I suspect Elbert is the latter. I see there is a female GB player who lost 0 and 0 in Sharm El Sheikh this week who Im also assuming is on holiday and thought why not hit a few balls. I dont really see this as a dig more the reality and nuances of opportunities that arise. And whenever Ive commented its more in appreciation of why not for doing it than any perceived dig. I think sometimes posters on here think a lot of these players have serious aspirations to make it in the game But I doubt thats the case. Its merely an opportunity so travel, keep fit, maybe coach and see the world and there is nothing wrong with that if they get the chance to. I suppose it does look strange sometimes when they may come up against players making comebacks and its kind of like an adult playing against their 3 year old child. Tennis is probably unique in that regard.
