Boys & Girls: J30 Liverpool indoor hard (week 6)

Qualifying for the first UK domestic junior tournament starts this weekend.

In addition there is a Tennis Europe cat 3 at the same time with qualifying on the Wirral.

Quite a few new names for me on the acceptance list and I should be down for the first couple of days

Just a little shout-out for 13 year-old winner, Tanishka Naveen

And for the 14 year-olds who won, namely: Hana Chouman; Eisha Chandi; Radostina Shopova; Jessica Morrison; Giselle Fiorentino; Awen Gwilym-Davies

It is a very young entry list this week.

Girls

The 'controversial' young girl from Pakistan, who's received a lot of attention from various tennis bigwigs, is playing here (Haniya Minhas)

If you have time, paulisi, I'd be curious to hear how you think she plays

Just for info:

Top seeds: Sarah Copley; Lauva (LAT); Minhas (PAK); Annabel Wong

Wildcards: Leah Bush; Sevil Parviz; Anna Wright; Erle (NOR)

Qualifiers: Tanishka Naveen (age 13); Giselle Fiorentino; Vanessa Mueller; Hana Chouman

I don't know the back story, but she is playing under the Saudi flag.

Given it is such a young field, the standard is well down on normal.

 Thanks - she's obviously changed

She was touted by IMG etc as being a great hope, age 10 or 11, along with Efremova etc.

Lots of media.

But then, as she got a little older, there was a lot of hoo-hah about how she should dress on court (head-covering, leggings etc etc) and - indeed - whether it was right for her to be playing tennis at all now she was no longer a kid

It didn't seem (to me) to be working very well in Pakistan, so I'm glad, for her, that she's changed, if it's now working better

She won, but it wasn't easy
She is very talented for her age and anything in the hitting zone was going for winners. Keep an eye out for her opponent, she is way better than her ranking.

Taniska won very easily against a very disappointing Norwegian girl. Difficult to judge her on that performance.

She is one of George Coupland's group out of Edgbaston, of which Leah Bush also won. She is similar in build and style to her sister.

On the boys side, the older stronger lads like Sam Chadwick, Jonny Cross, Casey Drakeetc should go deep.
Billy Moxon was very impressive with his big serve and ability to hit winners from anything shirt, although Brandon did little wrong.
Ollie Knight was well ahead when his opponent retired. He seems to have a bit more power.
Kyle Babbage has just stepped up from TE and will struggle until he grows and adds power. However his opponent was very averageand could hardly get a first serve in
Another youngster in Jan Janda played very well and has good hands, but was just could win the key points. He had chances.
Daniel Joita took a set of the top seed. Not bad for a lad who has been out injured for 7 months(apparently). He is very good defensively.

Opponent Hana Chouman? She was very very good at 11U and 12U. Won Tennis Europes and always did well at national tournament. Was on the same level as Daniella and Annabel. Went to France to train and some of her results when she came back were very disappointing- losing against girls she used to beat 1&1. Seems to have found her way back again over the last few months. I think she is going to start doing very well soon

For the rest of the girls, not mentioned previously Anna Wright looks a very capable back court player.
Rosie Cho has grown a lot and was very good, especially with her slice, against a very useful Norwegian.
Gisella Florentino is another new name and she took a while to figure out Tallulah game style (loop the ball back in and get everything back). Once she did, she won comfortably, but she needs to add some pace to her serve.
Chloe Cleaver dumped out the 7th seed.
Sarah Copley is either hot or cold and shecaas very cold in set one, but came through eventually.
The Latvian no 2 seed looked very good beating Lucy Bear easily.
They had similar defensive games, but the Latvian punished any errors or short balls.
