January 2025 Player of the Month Vote

Our first PoM vote of the season and also in the new home on the board. Lets make it a good one!
15 nominations below, vote for the one you believe is player of the month.
The vote will close on Tuesday evening at 8.15PM

Dont forget, if and when you vote, please try and let us know who you vote for and why; no problem trying to persuade others to support your preferred candidate!

1 Alastair Gray - two back to back M25 singles titles as he won 10 straight singles matches and reenters the top 500 and then some; follows up with a third M25 singles title in Glasgow at month end (and a doubles runners-up place earlier in the month) - so good to see him back smile.gif

2 Luke Johnson - for winning the title in Hong Kong with Sander Arends (a second straight title) which will likely give him a new career high ranking.

3 Henry Searle - reached his first ever Challenger final after a cracking week in Loughborough and enters the top 500 at 401.

4. Jack Draper - as #15 seed, 'just' matched his seeding by reaching R4, but came into the Aus Open having had a hip injury issue and lacking match play, won his first 3 rounds in 5 sets, having been 2 sets to 1 down in each and facing Aus players ( and crowds! ) in R2 & R3, playing better with each round. Unfortunately that hip issue and accumulated pain got the better of him at 5-7 1-6 down to Alcaraz in R4 and he sensibly called it off. Still, attitude, commitment!

5. Oliver Crawford - for winning the singles title at the M25 in Chennai (and for leaving Trump's USA and joining GB, at least in tennis terms )

6. Jonny Cross - for winning both the singles and doubles title in the J30 in Belgium and a ranking rise into the top 1000

7. Jake Fearnley - for reaching the third round in his first appearance at the Australian Open and for a very creditable performance in his loss to WR2 Zverev in the third round. With this and his semi-final in the Canberra 125 Challenger earlier in the month, he's reached a new CH inside the top 80, at WR77. At the end of the month, Jake also beat former WR4 (currently WR70) Kei Nishikori in his debut match at the Davis Cup, having had to take on the role of GB #1 thanks to the absence of Jack Draper and Cam Norrie.

8. Jodie Burrage - for getting her first win in the main draw at the Australian Open (only her third win in a grand slam) and for a very creditable performance in her loss to WR3 Gauff in the second round.

9. Henry Patten - at the Aus Open won the doubles title with Harri Heliovaara ( beating Bolelli & Vavassori in the final ) in 3 sets after losing a 34 point first set TB. Plus reached the SF of the mixed doubles with Olivia Nicholls, beating the top seeds Errani & Vavassori in R2. Prior to the Aus Open, reached the Auckland 250 SF with Harri, losing to Krawietz & Puetz, a defeat they avenged in the Aus Open SF. Has now reached a new doubles career high of WR3!

10. Andy Lapthorne - defended his AO wheelchair quad doubles title, seeded second with a win over the top seeds. Andy has the AO locked up - this is his 16th grand slam doubles title, 8 of which have been the AO, which he won in 3 of the last 4 years now.

11. Alfie Hewett/Gordon Reid - winning their sixth straight AO wheelchair mens doubles title (and Gordons 7th) as top seeds and proving once again they are the best doubles pair of all time. It is easy to dismiss it as just wheelchair tennis, but their achievement is one of sustained high performance as the worlds top team.

12. Alfie Hewett - winning the AO Mens wheelchair singles, his 10th grand slam title in singles, on the back of winning the doubles title. He beat the top seed and world number one, Tokito Oda, in the final 4 and 4 and proved he is back at the top of the game. He didnt lose a set and beat the worlds 9, 7, 4 and 1 players in order to take the title, losing just 20 games over 4 matches

13. Johannus Monday - a pretty untroubled looking 5 straight set wins takes JoMo to the Sunderland M25 title. Will take the current GB #10 up to about WR 320 from 10 counters.

14. Anna McBride - for winning a third AO singles title in a row in the PWII paratennis category, as well as finishing runner up in the doubles and helping the GB women's team take second place in the team event.

15. Charlie Robertson - for rescuing Wake Forest in his debut collegiate singles match and becoming an instant legend with the Winston-Salem crowd. With Wake Forest tied at 3-3 with Georgia, it all rested on Charlie to get a win in his debut match and save Wake Forest from their first loss of the season and only 2nd loss at home since the start of last season. With the pressure on, Charlie came back from 2-5 in the 3rd set, winning the last 5 games to secure a historic victory. As the Wake Forest head coach said, "to have a freshman in that situation, in his first [collegiate] singles match ever, and come back from 5-2 down in the third is pretty incredible"

Many worthy candidates but with his second grand slam victory, it has to be Henry for me. Jodie was close.

As usual, Ill go first, I have advance warning!

Great to see several AO champions this month and it is from those that I will make my vote. And with due respect to the others, two very clear favourites stand out for me - Henry and Alfie.

Although Henrys achievement caught our imagination and he has an exciting year ahead of him, my vote goes to Alfie - we have never had a wheelchair winner of PoM before and with two AO titles, in singles and doubles, and beating the world number one to win the singles, whilst taking his sixth AO doubles crown, I cant see how Alfie can do anymore.

I hadnt noticed before posting how the list this month is so much favoured men to women - 13 to 2- which I dont recall seeing before. I suspect it will in turn boost votes for Jodie as well and help make her a stronger challenger for the title, but lets see how it pans out.

Note that this season, all PoM votes will be using a roughly 36hr voting window eg Monday morning to Tuesday evening - where possible, it may change if we end up with a month requiring semis votes before a final.

I dont plan to push for votes as often this season, so will not be looking to put outline scores on the doors until much nearer the end of the vote, certainly not until the second day.

Im also, due to the slightly shorter voting period, not expecting as many votes as last year - not a massive drop off but a few votes less. So EVERY vote will count and every person who votes could make a difference. So please support it if you can!

As a reminder, the top two in each PoM make player
Of the season, if not already qualified. So extra incentive to vote and make it count.

3 titles in 1 month, you won't see that too often. So Alastair gets my vote.

A real toss up between Jodie, Henry and Jake. Will need to think.

Thanks for the early votes - I will switch the poll close timer on this evening around 9 and confirm the actual poll close time - it allows me to set it as 1 day, 2 days etc from the time you click the little button!

Henry, Andy, Alfie and Gordon all had a great AO and Jon's argument about Alfie is very persuasive, but my vote is going to Jake.

He put up a good showing at the AO (only his second grand slam main draw; the first was his WC at Wimbledon and he didn"t qualify for the US Open when he was carrying an injury), boosted his ranking into the top 80 with his performances across the month and did a great job on his debut at Davis Cup, when he had to step up to the number 1 slot at the very last minute.

Likewise, but I have Alfie in the mix too!

My greatest interest in tennis is looking out for and enjoying singles success, and that is my natural first consideration for PoM.

This time Jake and Ali came close for me.

But this month not quite enough to usurp Henry's Aus Open doubles runs and ultimate men's doubles success. My vote is for Henry.

Thanks to all who have voted so far, 13 votes in now and 6 players have received votes.

Interesting to see where this one will land!

It has to be Henry P for a grand slam win. Honourable mention to Alfie H but he has won so many times that his triumphs do not quite beat Henry's.

Excellent year for Henry topped by a grand-slam victory.

I think the fact he has won many titles does end up counting against Alfie in these votes and it is hard to see how he gets out of that cycle! He won Wimbledon singles, and the Paralympics Doubles, last year and both times he had strong main tour players who gathered more votes and got little support.

I think most people on here do admire him and what he does, but it doesnt quite get their vote when others - in the able bodied game - do something of note that month.

Alfie is probably one of those players whose body of work over a year amounts to a bigger thing than their single month achievement, relative to others, and he tends to therefore end up doing better in Player of the Season as opposed to Player of the Month.
