Looking back over sections of today's final Dani definitely showed the more all round game, and at each's best arguably looked the better player. But Megan dug in and fought with a well grooved game, and Dani err didn't and it drifted away which was a bit disappointing on such a day.
Really hope they can both continue to develop well.
Had a great time at Roehampton today. Really enjoyable tennis in the sun and the biggest takeaway was how mature the players were, they all really applied themselves well and gave it their best efforts!
The boys final was very close, especially the first set where there was very little to separate them. There were moments for both to bees serves but both held up well under the pressure in a very high quality set which Aran won in the TB. The second set I felt was a combination of a lapse from Aran and a sustained higher tempo from Vincent. The third set was quite comfortable for Aran who broke early on and was the more consistent. Aran has such a consistent game and hits very cleanly off both wings. He also moves exceptionally well and gets good whip on his serve. Showed a lot of variety too and knew how to construct points reflectively. Vincent is taller and has a big first serve and was able to generate a lot of power on his forehand. He also moved well considering his height and a lot of the time looked to dictate play. Looking forward to seeing/hearing more about these players as both showed signs of potential. I bumped in to Arans mum (who is so lovely and down to earth) at the end of the day as I was looking at the Roll of Honours board. She told me she had been watching the match indoors as she was too nervous! I was sat behind Arans coach who gave few but very useful advice at key moments which I think made a difference.
The girls final ebbed and flowed too. Daniella played at such a high intensity in the first set and was far too hot to handle (as she has shown throughout the tournament). The second set I thought was going to continue in Daniellass favour who had all the momentum but Megan turned it around and played consistently. The third set was easily won by Megan as Daniellas level dropped slightly. Both players move so well and there was a lot of dynamic play. Daniella was very good at moving forwards and constantly won points with good drive volleys. Megan spread the play well and hit with very good depth throughout. Both are very clean hitters and some of the rallies were quite amazing, going from side to side.
The NTC had a nice buzz to it too. Saw Hannah Klugman practicing and had a small chat to her coach Ben who is so lovely. Also saw Henry Searle practicing on the clay which was good to see. All round an excellent day out. Bring on the 18Us! :)
