As Merv says, there presumably is a strategic/medical reason for clay ....

 no, I agree - a lot of players use clay to hone their ground strokes, build their technical game. I wondered if it might be something like that?

Could be a tough opener for Marni. Curmi, as well as just missing being seeded, won a German W35 title last month on clay. Marni is showing as a clear 5/2 against outsider for the match.
