Boys & Girls: J200 Aldershot, hard (Week 16)

As usual a large field of Brits for this J200, won last year by Ben Gusic Wan and Megan Knight.  Main draws are up here  with Mark Ceban seeded 2 and Rhys Lawlor 3 in the boys, whilst Hollie Smart is seeded 2 and Daniella Britton 5 in the girls.

Live scores are available here

Round 1 is nearly complete. All 8 boys seeds won, including a double bagel from Mark. Liam Channon unfortunately retired after losing a 15-13 tiebreak against the fourth seed. So far all the girls seeds have progressed, but there is one match still on court, and in that Sophie Bekker leads the American 7th seed 6-4 3-1

Very nice win for Alex Mirrington over the #5 seed

Rhys also won, as did Billy Moxon in an all-GB clash

I went to watch some matches early this week and I have to say I was particularly impressed by South Wales boys Ollie Page and Archie Gray; they both really pushed their seeded opponent! I also enjoyed Alex M who plays really well. I hope that the 3 of them are considered for WCs at Wimbledon juniors, regardless of their ranking (and reward performance!).

Thanks for your impressions.  Yes, there is a good chance that they will all be on the list for main draw or at least quali wildcards for Wimbledon, as they are all in the current GB top 10 on ITF ranking

And the honours go to Mark and Daniella via similar comeback scoressmile      Mark's third J200 title is timely, having just dropped last year's Istres title from his ranking - which should mean he is safe for the Roland Garros main draw. Dani's second J200 title will put her back in the top 100

Boys F

CD/David/Rose, etc. - what is your evaluation of Daniella in terms of her potential? I get the sense the strength in depth on the girls' side isn't as good as previous years, but I'm interested to hear the views of someone who watches more of the matches.

I'm not trying to speak for Rose but she's been consistent (and posted quite recently - during the nationals, I think) that she's not a fan of Daniella's tennis long-term, in adult potential terms

I say that simply because I put quite a lot of store by Rose's opinion - she's seen far more live tennis from the players in question than I have

For me, the jury's out (which I realise is pretty wimpy, sitting on the fence, but it's where I am)

Daniella has none of the ease of play, the natural 'pretty' game, of players like April or Hannah

She also has a very 'closed' air when she plays, almost lackadaisical

So it's not an exciting watch, as such

However, she's got a good athletic physique, she has decent variety (likes to come in), she's quite an intelligent player on court, sees the court well, and she's very focused - it was absolutely no surprise to me that at the real crunch time in the 3rd set yesterday, Hollie capitulated and Daniella held strong.

It's one of those games where the total is far more than the sum of the parts

However, she's never played a single adult match (which is unusual - most top 2010s have, even those born late in the year like her).

She's also never done anything in the important junior events - the junior grand slams, the J500s, even J300s (mainly because she hasn't been ranked highly enough to participate, of course).

So, it's still very much a middling junior game, in terms of result sheet

So, for me, she's made good progress since joining Loughborough, there's quite a lot to like, but it's still very untested at higher level, and the game doesn't leap out in and of itself.

I havent seen her for a couple of years, but i thought there were a few others with more potential, but to be fair, she has put spme very good results at junior level in the last 18 months.

Thanks to Dani's title, and her subsequent rise to JR 74, Dani scraped into the quali list for RG juniors with a couple of days to spare

Good timing
