His persistance in playing a pretty full clay program the last 2 years in advance of the French Open, rather than travel to say the Far East for hard court events, is arguably admirable. Though last year I reckon it cost him getting into the top 100 for however much that matters to him
L32: Joel Schwärzler (AUT) WR 172 (= CH) vs (4) Jan Choinski WR 119 (CH = 117 last week)
I see that Schwärzler has popped up with a wild card in the doubles alongside a real blast from the past whose name I haven't seen mentioned for absolutely ages: 42-year-old Philipp Kohlschreiber!

Schwaerzler is someone worth watching - in singles and doubles.
In singles he is on the up and was a v strong junior, winning the year end junior masters in 2024. He has been in a challenger final already, on clay.
In doubles - he was a finalist in two junior slams and won one - can't recall if we won French or US, he was certainly finalist in both - and got to the final of the ATP Tour event in Kitzbuhel last year.
I suspect we will see him top 100 by end of the year in singles.

Interesting, thanks Jon. I see that the now 20 yo was JWR 1 and is live ATP race 130. And yes, beat Jan by 7-6(3) 6-2 on clay in Austria last September.

It was a good win for Jan in straight sets this week, definitely

And they've just beaten the second seeds, Cukierman & Hilderbrand, in three (4-6 7-6(4) [10-8]).
