Commonwealth Games - Glasgow

Downgraded last minute event after the Aussies dropped it.

Missing many events, big athletes missing out and poor TV coverage.

Unfortunately, i dont see this going on much longer.

PS - hosting commonwealth games and European Championships has ruined the domestic athletics calendar. All domestic champs crammed into 6 weeks and finished by mid July.

Sadly, the Commonwealth Games is never going to come back. Too expensive, sadly largely irrelevant in an ever crowded global sporting calendar. And sort of meaningless, what even is the Commonwealth these days?

I always enjoyed it in fact, but cant see a way back for it. Netball aside (which is de facto World Championships) and maybe Bowls, the other events have little meaning in the modern sporting world.

Such a pity.

Fair dos to the Scottish Government and Glasgow for doing a partial rescue act so that there are 2026 Games at all. But in 2014 they used Hampden ( required a lot of work to make it useable for athletics ) and I recall big athletes and I think pretty big crowds.

Has the Commonwealth Games had its time? I hear talk of allowing joint bids in the future for whatever that means / entails. India supposedly hosting in 2030.

Quite big in my office - we have the seldom used TV on in the lunchroom/staffroom. People watching it, getting involved. NZ are doing quite well.

Looking forward to the mile race tonight

Watched Josh Kerr getting the world record at London last night for the first time - hadnt had chance before - but have a feeling Jake Wightman could get this.

I know! And by a country mile. Wightman faded to 6th.

Just wish it was an Olympic year. I guess there is the World Ultimate Champs later this summer, though still not entirely sure I understand their status! Need to read more about them! ETA like a super masters event between the top in each event plus the big event current champions. Looks like Keely is qualified as world champion in her event but no other Brits just yet, although some will surely come through.

back to Commonwealth Games - see Australia has dominated to medal table.

Superb that Glasgow has taken it on definitely a place for this level of games love the way it stimulates innovation.. Mop man discuss sounds pretty cool & creative .. Ozzie the bull still the centre piece of Birmingham New St (aka central station) Obviously you dont have Ozzie but now nobody for .., really hoping Gerry Cinnamon closes the games!
