I think it would be in Anne's best interests not to have a wildcard. Some players are inspired by Wimbledon (eg Karen Cross and Jane O'Donoghue) whilst others struggle (eg Anne and Julie Pullin). Anne had 1 good year (d. Pratt and gave Sharapova a match for a while) but her other 5 appearances have been disappointing (crushing defeats by Srebotnik and Sprem, and unable to take advantage of winnable matches against Lee, Razzano and Diaz-Oliva)

I would put Anne into a WC play-off revised along the lines of the format used about 5 years ago: the 3 top-ranked players not to be allocated a direct WC, plus one player chosen by the LTA. This is because I think the LTA needs to protect many of our younger players from the scenario which has blighted Emily's career: ie a player progressing slowly up the rankings being catapulted to a level they are not yet ready for, struggling at the higher level and therefore being more prone to injury etc. This is a particularly important consideration this year, now that someone winning one match at Wimbledon is given 60 points.

So, for example, if direct WCs are awarded to Sarah B, Georgie, Naomi and Elena (my current selection, but this could easily change according to form nearer the time) then Anne, Mel and Katie would be invited to the WC playoff along with one other. Given that I don't think any other teenager would currently benefit from a main draw WC I would invite Amanda to be the 4th player. The 3 losing players would be given qualifying WCs if required (probably not needed this year given current rankings of the above selection) and other Brits would play-off for the remaining qualifying WCs.
True, she definately hasn't taken advantage of some good draws in the past. However, she's generally the best British player on the grass in the weeks leading up to Wimbledon, always does well at Surbiton and has had some good wins in the WTAs in the past. If she has another good few weeks before Wimbledon, do you think that could make a difference ?

It's been a poor year for her so far, by her standards...she seems to have got stuck in the 140-175 range, too good to sink below that as she's pretty consistent in getting to the latter stages of 25Ks but she's yet to show that she can get the results consistency against top 130 players in the 50Ks, 75Ks . tier III and IVs which are needed to make top 120 and higher.

The LTA rarely announce more than 4 wcs before the playoff...how many do they normally announce before it - 3 or 4 ? They might just give wcs to Naomi, Bally and Georgie and put Sarah in the playoff too and give wcs to the top 2-3 players there..could make things v interesting

With Emily, I think she was good enough to compete at that higher level, I mean she was on the brink of beating Amy Frazier and making rd3 of Wimbledon. Probably just took her time to get used to competing consistently at that level week in, week out...but those injuries were just really bad luck, awful mishaps

Good form for Anne just before Wimbledon would help, but there is also the psychological issue for British WCs of believing that they deserve to be there. Karen Cross only started her fine series by qualifying in 1997 and then winning through to the 3rd round. Going through qualifying or winning the play-off should help Anne.

The number of British WCs announced by Wimbledon before the play-off has been 4 or 5 in recent years.

One problem for players making a meteoric rise at Wimbledon is that their game may give them an advantage on grass  but the next major grass court tournament is 11 months away

there's something like 8 wcs for Wimbledon main draw, but brits only usually get 6

same amount of wcs for qualies I think, however not all will go to Brits

It doesn't say if those 8 people will be british or not.

I would say about 4 women will get WC's and maybe 5 men.

I expect players like Wozniacki, Cornet and Baczinsky to get WC's if they need them.

The LTA will nominate 8 Brits and the all england club will hand out wcs to who they think deserves them. I think (and hope) for about 6...at least 6 deserving cases

SO has anyone changed their minds recently.

ATM i'd say

MD WC's to

Naomi
Bally
Anne
Katie
Georgie(if shes fit and ready for it) If ready then quallies.

Quallies
Natacha Khan
Anna Smith
Anna Fitzpatrick
Emily Webley-Smith
Jane O'Donaghue
Georgie(if she decides to go this way)
Maybe Sarah B if she needs it.

I'd put Mel and Amanda in quallies.

I'd nominate Naomi, Bally, Anne, Georgie, Sarah, Mel, Katie and Natasha

Put Amanda, Anna Smith, Jane, Anna Fitzpatrick, Emily Webley-Smith, Dani Brown and Karen in qualies

An article in the current issue of British Tennis confirms that the play-offs will continue (12-15 June at Raynes Park) for qualifying WCs. So 8 players will be selected for either main draw WCs or quali WCs (if required - if any of our top 3 miss out on a main draw WC then their ranking will ensure entry to the qualies anyway) and the rest will compete for what quali WCs remain (doesn't say how many will be in the draw).

Hence if 2 of the 8 selected players are not offered main draw WCs , but require quali WCs, and 2 quali WCs are allocated to non-Brits, then the WC play-offs would be for 4 places - at least that's my interpretation.

So in a way they are returning to the old pre-qualifying way.

Georgie and Jane are not on the current Wimbledon entry list (nor Surbiton / Birmingham for that matter), so it does not look as if either are in contention for WCs. Georgie's unfortunate injury we know about, but I don't know whether Jane is injured, ill, taking a break to consider her options or retired. The last would be sad but not surprising, given her age and ranking. In previous years she has had Wimbledon main draw money to help her through, but just second qualifying round money from last year.

i can confirm that the qualifying play off wild card. was invitation only and the people who got invited have been decided. i know one person who has been invited to play but wont release the name untill i know some more of the players.

i also assume that if they have decided this then the 8 players have been given to wimbledon??????????
