Match reports from someone who went today....sounds like missed chances for Anna S, Anna F and Naomi B
"Naomi C vs Hewson Naomi played well. A few wobbles when ahead 5-2 in the second set, but generally a good performance. Hewson did not offer much resistance, too many unforced errors, but will be a very interesting match against Dell'acqua tomorrow.
Mel vs Brianti Was watching this 'at the same time'. Mel played aggressive stuff, and was on top pretty much throughout. Brianti tried her best to disrupt her, holding up play and talking to herself but she held strong. There was no evidence of a difference in rankings - which is a great sign.
Anna S vs Bai Only caught this from about 4-4 in the final set. I do know Anna was down 5-1 in the first set and came back to win it. She could have done the same in the final set, Bai was tight and there for the taking. Anna just couldn't finish her off. A very even match, disappointing Anna had to come off as the loser, but some good signs.
Anne vs Natasha Well Natasha certainly had her chances, but too many unforced errors. Anne did not play her best, but her more consistent game saw her through. Some really nice rallies, but unfortunately generally ended on an error rather than a winner. Anne vs Brenda will be interesting, because from what I saw, Brenda put in a powerhouse performance today.
Naomi B vs Dell'acqua This was the first I had seen of Naomi, and to start off with I was not impressed. But boy can she serve!! She had Dell'acqua under constant pressure with that shot, and looked confident throughout. At 4-3 up in the final tie break (with a mini break too) her game just disappeared though. Looked a VERY bright prospect, and so sad to see her in tears at the end of the match. Her heart and fight should have seen her through. Just short though.
Elena/Naomi C vs Emily/Anna S Elena and Naomi looked a good pairing, laughing and joking. They just basically played more consistently than their opponents! When down 3-1 in the second set they turned up the heat and Emily/Anna could not live with it. Some good shots, and the left/right combo of Naomi/Elena looked great!! Interesting to see how they fair in the next match.
I didn't see any of Anna F or Olivia, but Anna F was 5-1 up in the first set and let it slip. Disappointing. Olivia looked like she was simply outplayed although a lot of the games (particularly in the second set) went to deuce. "
I watched both matches (they were on the 2 court centre courts together). Both girls fought well against much higher ranked players, and in the end it came down to only a few points for Naomi - in particular the point where she was broken to 5-4 in the last. Elena looked out of it in the last, but broke Asha Rolle when she was serving for th match and then saved 5 match points before finally losing. Had a brief word with her later and she seemed upbeat about her performance and the way she is coming back.
Unfortunately after yesterday's great win (Yuan has beaten Anne K twice this year), Katie went down rather tamely 6-0, 6-3 today to Morita....bit surprising as Morita hasn't got any real big weapons for grass, just very solid
Another disappointment is Mel South losing 7-5, 7-5 to Racquel Kops-Jones
Elena Baltacha & Naomi Cavaday (Gbr) bt Lilia Osterloh & Ahsha Rolle (USA) w/o
Did the Americans withdraw because they are playing in the Birmingham qualies? Then surely Mel (who should hopefully make the cut) should also be playing there?? This is all just speculation on my part of course.
I doubt that's the case for the withdrawal, doubles final is today and Birmingham qualies start on Sat morning, plenty of time to get from Surbiton to Birmingham considering that players often travel through the night sometimes to makes qualies sign-ins
