Fabulous win against Molik! i hope this is the start of good things to come from her. Since Januwary she hasnt been able to play well in the singles, but i suppose grass is her saviour, she always seem confidence on this surface. Well done Mel, just checked the result on BBC text, i suppose i underrated her after the first set, but luckily she hung in her!
Centre Court (Play starts at 11:30) Anne KEOTHAVONG (GBR) v Elena BALTACHA (GBR)
Court 1: Shahar PEER (ISR) v Elena LIKHOVTSEVA (RUS) Tathiana GARBIN (ITA) v Marion BARTOLI (FRA) Vasilisa BARDINA (RUS) v Katie O'BRIEN (GBR) (half 3/ 4ish)
Wonderful day for British women's tennis - congratulations to all 3! In the 12 years I have followed this tournament this is the most number of players we have had in both the first and second rounds (I can only recall 2 main draw winners - Sam Smith defeated Yayuk Basuki in 1998, before her big Wimbledon and Amanda Keen defeated Zheng Jie in 2004).
The match between Anne and Elena should be on Eurosport tomorrow.
Unbelievable result for South. I struggle to imagine how a player who was horribly outplayed by Brandi at the same tournament a year ago could beat Molik.
Truly amazing stuff yesterday...I expected all 3 to lose tbh especially given Molik's game for grass, Schruff's win over Tamasugarn on Sunday...but all 3 got through
Here are some post-match quotes:
A delighted South said: Thats definitely one of my best wins, maybe the second best of my career after Wimbledon last year so Im absolutely delighted.
Its been a great day for the British girls now weve got to try and become more consistent and keep it going.
OBrien is rewarded with a first round tie against Russian Vasilisa Bardina and the Brits confidence will be sky-high after her recent impressive performances.
She said: Im so happy about the way I pulled it out at the end. After winning the first set I lost my way a bit in the second but was really pleased with the way I came out firing in the third.
Twenty-three-year-old Baltacha was no less impressive as she swept aside Julia Schruff from Germany 6-1, 6-1. In windy conditions Baltacha dominated proceedings from the opening game to book a main draw first round match with British No.1 Anne Keothavong on Tuesday.
An elated Baltacha said: I played really well in those conditions. I had nothing to lose, shes a higher-ranked player so I thought Im really going to enjoy it and Im so happy that I made it through to the main draw.
If you can get through qualifying its really exciting. Ive just come back from injury and its about playing as many matches as I can, and its a bonus at Eastbourne because its one of my favourite tournaments.
