Rebecca Fong defeated Wei-Na Liu, a qualifier from China, 6-3 6-3
Seems like a fairly routine victory over someone who could cause problems - Liu may have been unranked but few Chinese players play outside of their own country and obviously as a qualifier she would have won a few matches.
Next up for Becky is WC and Number 1 seed Angela Haynes from USA. Haynes is a former top 100 player (I think, or almost top 100 anyway) and memorably caused Serena Williams some problems in their first round encounter at Wimbledon in 2005. Haynes destroyed her first round opponent Elizabeth Begley, also from USA, 6-2 6-0. Clearly Becky will be causing a massive upset if she wins that encounter.
Sadly Becky was trounced 6-0 6-1 by Haynes which wasn't a massive surprise - if Fong had managed to stay close to Haynes then that would have been an amazing performance. Still she can take heart from another 2nd round run and take that confidence into next where she's playing the qualies at 25K Allentown, USA.
