Anne K also lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-2....did well to take a set off Pascek though
V disappointing from Bally tho, that was a winnable one...still she's only been back on tour for a couple of months and seems to be returning to her best...promising signs
"This is my biggest win by a long way, my other biggest win was last year here again so I am really comfortable at the DFS," the Kent-born player said.
"I really enjoy it here. I know she has been struggling recently since she finished with her coach. She gave it her best shot and I think I played well, I played a good match."
The youngster, who has been confirmed as a wild-card entrant at Wimbledon, said the win vindicated her new more relaxed approach to games.
"I have been really enjoying my tennis this year and I think it has been helping me finish off matches because I'm not getting too wrapped up in anything that can be too distracting," she said.
It's just a fantastic result from Naomi, I didn't expect that at all....to completely hammer the world no 61 is just amazing, haven't seen a result like that from a British girl for ages
Playing Bartoli will be great experience for her, will be very interesting to see how well her game matches up against such a class player. I don't think Naomi will be overawed by her ranking, she'll go into that one believing she can win. She's played girls of that calibre in practise before, she had several practise sessions with Vaidisova at Indian Wells earlier this year, playing points and games.
any chance considering its grass court time that we could get a noami's ranking thread as she is likely to rise up the rankings highly if she can get a win or two at this and the following 2 tournies.
10 ranking points for Naomi's win. Useful. Another 10 if she can beat Bartoli, which would be quite something.
Given Naomi running Sugiyama close last year at wimbledon, we shouldn't be surprised she can do this on grass. Some good results in the three WTA events here, and she could easily see a good ranking rise.
Actually, all that is needed is a nice draw at Wimbie and the ridiculous 60 points that come with a R1 win.... Fingers crossed she gets an easier one than last year...
(Now moved house so back in land of living. Sort of)
Couple of days too late but here are some reports from the qualies matches at the weekend from a poster on GBTG:
Andreja Klepac def. Amanda Keen
I tell you I was about to walk away from this match Amanda was so bad, and Klepac was not much better. It was truly awful. Amanda must have thought the same. Have no idea why she retired, she lost the first set, sat down and retired. Maybe it was a cold or hayfever as she was sniffing as she walked onto court.
Sarah Borwell def Katie O'Brien Battle of the serves really. Any chance of a rally would be ended by an error in most cases. Sarah looks really thin but no sign of any injury. Hooray!
Meng Yuan def Jade Curtis Well done to Jade for putting up a good showing here. I really was impressed by her. Blistering forehand, good movement around the court and likes to go to the net. Backhand a bit suspect, and both players not keen to hold serve. Glad Jade got a wildcard as she put up a god fight in a long match.
Yuliana Fedak def. Amanda Elliott I am now a big fan of Amanda. She is like Magui Serna, walks like Magui and plays very similar to Magui. I think she's great. Big forehand and not afraid to come to the net. Shame she made one to many errors, but like Jade glad she was given the chance.
Olga Govortsova def. Karen Paterson Arrrrgggghhhhhh! Oh my good god! Arrrrggggghhhhh. Karen you led 64 *43 and then everything went downhill. She played such fantastic tennis throughout the match, i was extremely impressed as I always am with Karen, then I think she must have got nervous or something cos her level of play went down from there. She did take an injury time out at the end of the 2nd.
Lilia Osterloh def. Anna Fitzpatrick I've never been a fan of Lilia and I am even less of one now. Anna came from behind to win the first set, and was 1-4 in the 2nd, and even though she was clearly in control with no problems she took an injury time out and was away from court for about 15 minutes. She walked off, and came back looking no different. There was absolutely no need as this injury clearly had no affect on her play and she still won the 2nd set. Then in the 3rd set it was Anna's turn for the injury time out, but unfortunately she couldn't get back in the match.
Anna Smith was also injured and had to have heavy strapping on her thigh mid-way through the 1st set after she had 2 breakpoints on one of Yan's service games.
Players impressed with; Jade Curtis, Amanda Elliott, Anna Fitzpatrick Players not so impressed with; Amanda Keen (not an obvious injury but if it's serious I of course give her the benefit of the doubt), Katie O'brien (no need for all the screaming and recquet throwing)
I was v surprised that after her rd2 qualies loss Mel said that she was a bit tired after all the matches she'd had recently....to me this sounds like she needs to work on her fitness...I mean she'd only had 5 singles matches in 7 days...not that much...plus 4 doubles matches I guess but those don't take nearly as much energy out of you as singles. Tsonga played the same no of singles matches in 2 days !!!
Btw...you can watch really good video clips of Anna F, Jade C, Sarah, Natasha and several others Brits here:
Yeah I think it could be close....Bartoli made the Birmingham quarters last year but she had two very, very close matches against Morita and Mattek and Naomi can beat both of those girls on grass
she's the world no 20, made rd4 of roland garros, beating Dementieva. Also, she made the semis of Strasbourg and the final of Prague in May
