Great day, made even better because Juska lost and his serve should be pretty effective indoors at futures level. Good wins especially for Cox, Smethurst & Arlidge (Skupski should really be higher ranked than he is so I'm not surprised). I'll go for Fleming, Milton, Baker, Evans & Skupski to win in R2.
So Dan Evans wins the first round of the battle for the second DC cup spot. I asked Dan how he thought he would get on against Eaton just before the match...he shrugged he shoulders, smiled and said 'dunno mate'.
I was very pleased when it worked out that this would be the first match I would watch today. Very keen to see Eaton in action in the flesh for the first time.
Almost Murray like Dan dropped his opening service game and then did not put much wide and long after that. The first set went with serve but Evans was much the more animated and always got on the scoreboard against the Eaton serve...well apart from the last game on the first set but more of that in a minute. Chris varied his game serve and volleying and some good baseline tennis but just seemed to be hanging on in that first set. Dan felt agrieved on several line calls and blew several break points. The rather cheap looking plant pot court side felt the 'toe' of the Evans foot towards the end of that first set spilling the compost onto the floor ! The last game of the first set was quite bizarre. Eaton quickly went up 40-0 with Evans looking disgusted at himself for missing a pass. Whilst retrieving a ball from back of the court Dan changed the scoreboard himsel to read games 0-0 sets 1-0 to Eaton. He then took up his position at the baseline waiting for Eaton to serve. Chris was baffled but served it out with a service winner and took the set 6-4.
Evans then really stepped it up several gears. I have seen Dan play in the flesh only 5 times but the tennis he played in sets 2 and 3 was just fantastic. Eaton had no answer. Every time he came in Evans just saw channels on either flank to pass. He rarely missed. His ground shots were some of the hardest I saw all day (Apart from Jean Claude...what a weapon he has...but is a hit or a miss !). Evans broke early in both sets and I do not remember him facing a BP in those final two sets. Eaton barely lets out a murmur when playing but the frustration of playing against someone who got everything back eventually appeared. Another weapon Dan used well was the lob....it certainly gave Chris food for thought as he was lobbed several times throughout. A double break in the final set gave Evans a 4-6 6-2 6-1 victory thouroughly deserved. I gave him a good firm scottish handshake 'well done son'....'cheers mate' still smiling was the reply.
Paul Annacone was here today and if he saw the match in full then Im sure he would have been impressed.
Slightly disapointed with Eaton...didnt seem to fight for it. Evans used his agression to his advantage never really losing the plot. Eaton gave up tamely in the end.
Sorry for confusing you Steven earlier...was breaking in my new N96 using the WIFI coming from just behind the stand !!! Thanks for posting the txts I sent though.
Good set of results there. All the young guys won except for Marcus.
Marcus had an off day...I saw a bit of his match..both he and Rudy Coco didnt play that well....he was up in both sets !!!
He had some consolation in the doubles, though: he & Dan S (UNR) did for the second seeds, Charroin & Robert (WR 671), 3-6 6-4 [10-7]! They play the unranked Irishmen, Barry King & Colin O'Brian, who dumped out Coxy & Josh Milton (WR 1934) 6-4 7-6(3) ( ), in the QFs.
Other results:
(1) Colin Fleming & Ken Skupski (WR 568) beat Lukas Lacko & Marek Semjan (SVK/WR 1152) & play Tim Bradshaw & Kyle Brassington (WR 2736), who saw off the unranked Swiss/Russian pair, Grégory Chambaz & Anton Manegin, 5-7 6-3 [10-7], in the QFs.
Jamie B & Chris Eaton (WR 1306) easily accounted for Niall Angus & Oliver Evans (oh 'eavens, another one!) (UNR) by 1 & 1 ( ) & play the Russian third seeds, Belyaev & Krotiuk (WR 891), in the QFs.
The unranked WCs, Alexander Bull & Thomas Knights, had a great win over Baptiste Bayet & Valentin Sanon (FRA/CIV) (WR 1918) by 4-6 7-5 [10-8] ( ) & play the French pair, Romain Jouan & Pierrick Ysern (WR 1254), in the QFs. The latter dumped out the Finnish fourth seeds, Harri Heliovaara & Timo Nieminen, 4-6 6-2 [10-7] (WR 1037), today!

LOL That's ok, I was just intrigued as to what the setup was, assuming that it was easier for you to type directly into here but that you had to move to get within wi-fi range and that's why you were sometimes texting instead.
Anyway, a really good day overall - it's not often you see SEVEN wins by Brits against higher-ranked players on the same day (only two of them against fellow Brits) and it's amazing that there are only two seeds left after R1, a bit like Hobart this week.
The Smethurst and Arlidge wins in particular suggest that they're ready to push on again this year and while I know Ken should be ranked higher than he is, he wasn't in particularly good form towards the end of last year, so beating the the no. 2 seed should be just the confidence boost he needs.
The Evo-Lacko match tomorrow is crucial, I think, because if Evo can win, it's hard to see the top half finalist not being Evo or one of the two Scots.
It's already hard to see past Robert for the bottom half finalist, but I hope to be proved wrong there!
Btw in case Fitzy's feeling a bit battered after today, it's worth reminding him that as recently as Nottingham last September, Robert beat Flan 1 & 2, Arlidge 3 & 0, Fleming (just starting out on his comeback, so hopefully he's do better now) 2 & 2 and Josh 4 & 0 on the way to winning the title, so only getting three games off him is hardly a disgrace. Indeed, for the last few months, he's been handing out bakery products as if he's trying to clear the EU flour mountain!

So the tennis compensated for his behaviour? Not sure kicking plant pots etc. would fill me with confidence as a DC captain (but then neither would Boggo).
It's not called freewebs any more, it's called webs (perhaps someone reported them to trading standards for not being free) ... maybe one day they'll go the whole hog and renameit ****webs ...
