Just got back, arrived later than I had intended due to going to the carnival yesterday. I saw about two hours of play before a huge deluge of rain at 14:30ish looked like I was going to stay for the next few hours (whilst sheltering I heard the linesmen & umpires discussing where it could be moved indoors if the weather is as bad as predicted for the rest of the week...)

Anyway I did get to watch some entertaining tennis (though was sad to hear that Webbers had pulled out but was probably for the best).

Jocelyn Rae vs Elisha Gabb 6-7 6-1 6-4
I arrived just as Elisha clinched the first set, so can't really comment how it had gone up to that point. The second set got to 1-1 when it started to rain so I ran off to grab some lunch. 20/30 mins or so later I was back, and the second set had already whizzed past! In the final set Joss raced to a 3-1 lead, and had points at 4-2 to get the double break, but Elisha held. Elisha then broke back to level it at 4-4, but Joss was unfazed and played some smart tennis to regain the advantage before closing out comfortably to love. I was impressed by Joss, she had a huge serve and forehand, solid backhand which she sliced well, she came forward a fair bit and was good around the net, she also hit some lovely drop shots, and moved better than I expected considering she is statuesque. The best shot was after thumping a forehand and getting a weak shot back, she took the pace off the next forehand and calmly struck the line for a winner instead of belting it. Elisha has a pretty good and aggressive game. She can hit pretty big of her groundstrokes, particularly off the backhand (there were some great passing shots), but she sometimes seemed to go for too much too soon, and generally made more mistakes than Joss. Her serve was quite powerful and oftened helped her get the advantage in rallies, she also displayed some touch around the net.

Jen Ren vs Ulrikke Eikeri
This was going on a couple of courts away whilst Gabb & Rae were playing - I'm not sure who won, as it ended just before I got back from lunch. Jen has a decent serve and seemed to place her shots well, however she seemed maybe a bit passive, and she and the Norweigian engaged in lots of loopy shot rallies. Her opponent didn't have a huge serve, so I was pleased to see Jen stepping in on the second serve. Can't say much more really.

Lisa Whybourne vs Elodie Rogge-Dietrich - Whybourne led final set 4-1
This seemed like an epic match, so after watching the mens that followed Rae-Gabb for a bit, I decided to head over to the upper courts. Lisa was serving at 3-0, but was broken, but broke back to make it 4-1 as the deluge started. She seemed pretty irked to have lost the game that she did as she bitching about it on her phone as she rushed from the court. Lisa hits the ball really hard and flat and was able to overpower her French opponent, however she didn't comprimise on her strategy so when she was push side to side she still went for every ball in the same way - which did result in some errors. She also got pretty negative during the game that she was broken in, but she came back strongly and hit a sumptuous backhand return crosscourt that she seemed pretty pleased with.

I saw some of Evans vs Bevan, pretty tight encounter and was 7-5 to Ollie when the rain started. Bloomers was playing a German who was having a mare of the time. Richard took the first set 6-1, in the final game of the set the German hit every backhand he got into the middle of the net. The German seemed to pull himself together more at the start of the second set and held serve reasonably, so perhaps Bloomers will have a tougher time of it.
