Great win and, as Phil says, augurs really well for the future when she can concentrate 100% on tennis.
That said some other mild distraction / interest may be good for some folk but I do certainly get the impression Heather's studies and work she puts in their are certainly much more time consuming than that.
Naomi won through to the 2nd round of the $25k at Hammond,Louisiana with a 6-1,6-3 victory over Mathilde Johansson of France. Johansson is currently ranked WTA209 although she has been as high as 45 in the world! Naomi will now play the winner of Kimberly Couts (USA) and Petra Cetkovska (CZK) for a place in the 3rd round. Naomi and Heather Watson play their 1st round doubles match later today.
Clearly though Mel has had a bad loss. I sensed from her twitters that she was previously getting rather frustrated that she felt she couldn't bring her game to court. That latest twitter sounds a bit melodramatic, hopefully though she is indeed just going to get down to really working to turn things round.

Feel awful for Mel, it must be horrible to be so low on confidence (I assume Mandy is in a similar situation, albeit worse). But there's so much potential in this year for her, and when she does get the winning mindset back, she'll probably be a better player than when she had it before, with all the hard work she's put in. Keep trying Mel!
Johansson. Seems that her psyche and game has completely crumbled since she had that epic choke vs Diatchenko at the French last year and she left the court bawling her eyes out. But good win for Naomi. :D

Wow todays scores have gone against what I would have predicted. Naomi has just got better with each match but I would have to predict that Johansson had a howler given the one sided nature of the scoreline if not Naomi has played some serious tennis today. As for Mel she can't get any worse which is a positive but she is playing well below her capabilities. She needs to find a spark from somewhere which if she can find it I agree with jb she could well be a better player and get back up to near the top 100.
Weird day the two I thought would win have lost and vice versa. Saying that if the break that Doi has had has made her recapture her best form she would be favoured to beat Georgie so not a big surprise. Georgie is a really hot/cold performer she just needs to become more consistent and then we can see her get back up to at least the top 150. Interesting she is the only one of our top girls that doesn't use twitter so difficult to get any insight as to how she thinks.
Heather/Naomi must have won their doubles as well as they also play tomorrow so both definitely on a roll.
They had quite a tussle, but they did: 5-7 7-6(5) [10-8]! Heather, in particular, must be knackered! The Chinese second seeds, Lu & Sun, next on the agenda, while Mel & Georgie take on the Belorussian top seeds, Kustova & Yakimova...!
