Fitzy retired in her qualy match, so with Tara this tournament has already proved to be a bit of a nightmare. No show for JoKo again, she clearly likes to withdraw at the last minute, very strange.
Certainly Laura won't be back until at the very earliest the backend of March.
Has there been more news about her then? I thought it was 3 weeks from Hopman.
There was an indepth article in The Times with her new coach (PM). Amongst other things the article revealed that the injury was worse than first reported. The abductor muscle that was injured was torn leaving 7cm of scar tissue, so PM said that it would be 2 months before Laura would be back on a tennis court. That article came out about two weeks ago, but of course unless you are a Times subscriber you can't get access to it. Because of the severity of the injury special care would have to be taken in the rehab to ensure the area wouldn't be reinjured in the future.
The article also talked about the fact that Laura was ' 1000kms away from being a top 10/ number 1 player'. To get there PM said that Laura must get much quicker and become more reactive on the court, but reassuringly he feels she can get there.
Thanks Phil, but thats pretty bad news, I had no idea the injury was that bad and had been expecting her name to pop up in Itf entry lists pretty soon. Shame.
Mm, not the greetest draw for Brits making too many rounds with our two non seeded direct main draw entries ( Mel and Naomi ) drawing Belarussian seeds. Would have been good if Naomi had an easier draw to build on after last week then the WR 121.
Our four WCs have at least missed seeds but only Lucy has got anyone outside the top 400 in the world. Tough asks for all also, but maybe a chance there for Lucy.
At least Katie as no 3 seed seems to have a decent first round draw and if she wins that then Dean or M'lady ( ) with her potential quarter final opponent Vrljic now, post the Australian Open, actually ranked higher than Katie and her ranking very much moved up over the last year.
