Sadly Eleanor won just one game against Mlad.

Whenever I see that girl's name written as Mlad my brain translates as Vlad the Impaler. . .

I 'compromised' on twitter during the Hopman Cup & AOQ and simply referred to her as Mlad the Impaler. wink

Would have been nice to have got one more win to add to Katie and Naomi, though purely on rankings Katie was the only higher ranked player in her match.

Looks decent performances by Jade and Lucy, disappointing from Mel, and Eleanor clearly found it very tough.

Samantha has at least got a ranking now ( as has Eleanor ) and it will be interesting to see how she progresses.

Decent efforts by most of our players.
Katie will find it tough against the Impaler but the draw has really opened up for the Broadster, so quietly confident of further progress there.

What evidence do you have for this assertion?

Something you pick up when following 1000's of matches every year, players who come through very tough matches get additional mental strength from knowing they can win when defeat was maybe more likely. It obviously doesn't happen in every case but I would eat my hat if it didn't happen in more than 50% of cases.

How do you measure mental strength?

It's what you would describe in accountancy terms as an intangible asset.
Difficult to calculate an accurate value but certainly worth something.

I would say that winning a close match against a player supposed to be better than you would be more beneficial than losing, more often than not.

I suspect that any benefit is fleeting.

Successful people in any walk of life are self-confident "from within". It is part of their personality. Their self-confidence is not materially affected by day-to-day successes and failures.

If you need success to boost your self-confidence, then I doubt that you have the resilience to be a successful tennis player. Or indeed, a successful anything ....
