Very impressive win in the end for the reason that Alex gave. Players who come from a set and consolidated break down to level normally go on to win the match. Credit to Heather for not allowing that to happen considering the recent H2H
So often the traditional pattern of a tennis match (esp in women's tennis (and super especially for british women)) dictates that the player in the lead, who lost the momentum, capitulates. Happy to see Heather didn't allow that to happen.
P.S. Can you use a bracket inside another bracket in grammar? lol
I only cottoned on to the match at MP so went very well when I was watching.
Did enjoy reading back over it, great when you know the result. Oh, so many women's matches can be roller coasters and it takes a brave person in a potentially close match to start getting too confident or lose faith too soon. To me and I'd guess some others, with serve less dominating, I always feel service breaks up are so much less significant and each game so much closer to a 50 / 50 game than in men's matches. Certainly keeps the interest going
Anyway, potential tough road now in Heather's half with potential meetings with first Oudin and then Marino.
Difficult to fully judge and yes Oudin has for quite a long time now not had much match winning success at all, but on the other hand since last June she has only lost two matches to players outside the top 50, to WRs 79 & 101. Yes, some losses have been quite big but others pretty close matches. Marino on the other hand has had a lot of wins, particularly at the tail end of last year, although playing generally much lesser ranked players.
I reckon I would personally at this stage myself have Oudin just tournament favourite ahead of Marino. I don't see her tournament favouritism as that unreasonable. But you get in there, Heather !!
This so far is Heather's fourth counting tournament of 70 ranking points or more, but one more win and it'll be a 138 counter and then....

I would make Heather's match with Oudin 50/50, so on that basis I don't see Oudin as tournament favourite. I really think anybody could win this, Hradecka the girl who won Midland last week has to have as good a shot as any.

Yes, certainly good point re Hradecka. She must be in with a shout too, not just re last week but looking at the results she has been getting generally recently.
Maybe even one or two more names would put themselves forward more than I realise but can't examine everyone in detail
So, yes, pretty open and will be very interesting to see how it all plays out.
Actually, as we stand now, Anne K is still ahead of Heather in ranking points earned this year, largely because of the 160 points she got for qualifying and winning one round of the Aussie Open.
1. Anne 238 2. Heather 207 3. Elena 161
Heather would earn a further 60 points if she won her QF match.
Individual points breakdowns up to the end of last week are here :
