RE: Week 7 - WTA International ($220K) - Memphis, USA - Hard

Another great week for Heather.

After all the hype Laura has received (general media) compared to Heather it's really heartening to see Heather over the last 12 months "step up to the plate" and start to make real inroads towards the top 100.

I would be amazed if she didn't make the top 100 now at some point (maybe sooner than later) this year. She may even end up as GB number 1 by the end of the year.

Great progress Heather is making. The best thing I like about Heather is she appears to be learning against players she's lost to in the past. So the next time she plays Rodina, I'm expecting Heather to win a set or maybe even a win.

The future of GB women's tennis is in great shape with Laura and Heather.

Onwards and Upwards.

Qualy cut off is 3wks before main draw starts, main draw 6weeks.

I think she'll be ok for both.

Big chance missed today, if she'd played to her best she could have made it.

It is really great to see Heather's progress and now she may indeed share more limelight with Laura in the future.  Laura herself has being doing fine and she did exceed almost everyone on here's stated forecast at the beginning of last year of her end of year ranking position.  Hopefully she will be back soon. Heather did as well and is already looking like tearing apart this year's average prediction.  While generally seemingly  overoptimistic in our rankings predictions for Brits, we tend as a forum to seem quite conservative in these two girls' rankings, maybe understandably don't want to expect too much.

So anyway just to raise expectations    wink

Heather's counting ranking tournaments will now consist of :

8 tournaments added  March 2010 to July 2010  :  150 points
8 tournaments added August 2010 to February 2011  :  374 points

Total updated ranking points =  524 , equivalent to WR 133 in the current ranking table.

But 2 x 374  =  748, equivalent to WR 87 in the current ranking table

Just saying......

Absolutely Indy, Heather is comfortably on track for the top 100 this year, and even could get there by the end of May.
Spotted an entry for Monterrey w/c 28/2, currently occupying a qualification place. So a week off and then back to work.

Now, you're just encouraging me, Phil  smile

But yes, on the sooner rather than later thoughts, also mentioned by qjr, that 150 split for the first 8 tournaments includes 80 points from Eastbourne L16 last year that won't come off until the start of Wimbledon.

She has 459 of her current counting ranking points ( last 10 counters ) safe until the week before Wimbleon, "all" she has to do is add another 229 ( from say 6 more ) by say the end of May / early June and she'd have 688, currently equivalent to WR 100.

What ranking is 'usually' the last direct acceptance for a Grand Slam? Could she make the MD at FO and Wimby if she continues in this vain?

I'm not sure if the women are any different, but for the men it is usually about #104

Is it 108 for women?

That looks close. With the points Anne has just lost and points Bally has to defend, we could have 3 or 0 automatic qualifiers

As Alex questioned it is basically 108 for the women.  There are only 12 qualifying places for women at the French Open and Wimbledon ( and also the Australian Open ).  There are 16 qualifiers ( as for the men at all the Slams ) at the US Open.

Up a bit for any withdrawals, down for any PR entries. Wouldn't expect it really to end up lower.

Heather can most definitely qualify as a DE for the main draws of the French Open and Wimbedon.

As I said 6 tournaments totalling 229 points on top of the 10 "banked" worth 459 would take her to 688 points, about the top 100, and she'd actually need about 50 less to reach the top 108 on current rankings ( NB :  if she has a MD place in IW and / or Miami these will be mandatory counters which would be a potential slight issue if she was to lose in the first round  ) .

( actually in thinking about it, getting in 6 more counters before at least the French Open cut-off date is not happening so would need get these points from less tournaments plus counting a bit more from some others that won't have dropped off but you get the idea in some form it is certainly doable but probably does need really good points out of IW and Miami ).

Would have to have her ranking there by the date the entry list is made up ( that I think either 5 or 6 weeks before the relevant Slam main draw starts ? )

Of course I think if she doesn't make it she might just get a MD WC for Wimbledon  smile

Just checked up ( hey, wasn't doing a lot  smile ) and :

Bally will be fine for both the French Open and Wimbledon,  Currently on 870 points, 3 tournaments to drop off worth 230, can be replaced by a current 20 point non counter and worse case scenario two 5 pointers from IW and Miami leaves her on 670 points which should certainly be plenty good enough without winning another match until these Slams.

Anne actually looking better than I thought, considering she will be dropping out the top 100 on Monday.   Will be on 621 points, take off 72 points for 4 tournaments to drop off before French open entry date leaves her on 549 points, could for the moment replace with 4 current non counters worth 61 points taking her back to 610 points ( very unlikely to be a DE for Miami or I presume IW so won't have to take a mandatory 5 there for losing 1st round ).  Given WR 108 is currently 631 points she's not that far short if she can just add a bit to these 16 "banked" worth 610 points.  Wimbledon in theory bit more of an issue but of course she would get a MD WC there if it came to it.

Don't know if there was a link earlier to Anne's blog which she wrote in Memphis just after she lost in the second round to Rybarikova

http://www.realbuzz.com/blogs/u/Anne_Keothavong/anne-keothavong-s-blog/posts/learning-from-my-losses/

As usual she was very hard on herself about that loss, but since Rybarikova has just beaten an in form Hradecka to  reach the final, it puts her loss in a better light for her I hope.

I do wonder why Anne hasn't considered employing a coach to travel with her (I'm assuming that she doesn't). She always finds it difficult to pick herself up after a tough loss and having someone motivating you at that point makes a real difference.

She did have one last year, Luke Millington I believe.  I think she fired him.
