Nicola's reward for making it through qualies is an encounter with the top seed, who lost in round one last week but will surely be a tough proposition.
R1: Nicola GEORGE (GBR) Q 870 Vs Kumiko IIJIMA (JPN) (1) 214 R1: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) 383 Vs Viktorija RAJICIC (AUS) 501 R1: Katie O'BRIEN (GBR) (2) 218 Vs Erika TAKAO (JPN) 357
Iijima is actually on a 4-match losing streak, starting with the Bangalore 50K Final last December, so she is 0-3 in 2011. Indeed, since winning two weak Japanese 25Ks in a row in Sep/Oct, she has lost in R1 in 6 of her last 9 events, including a 4 & 5 loss to Lisa Whybourn in Esperance. I imagine she'll still have too much for Nicola, but she does seem to blow very hot - mainly in Asia - and cold in most other places.
Katie played Takao once before, beating her 6-0 6-7(9) 6-1 in Bronx qualifying in 2006.
Rajicic is an up-and-coming 16-year-old, but like Iijima, she has also lost all her matches so far this year - 4 of them, the first two in WTA qualifying, the last two in 25Ks. She beat Eleanor Dean 9-7 in a final set t/b in Cairns qualifying last year.
