RE: Week 9 - ITF ($25K) - Sydney, Australia - Hard

Emily:

"Got another w today,3+1,best I've played for a while,was fun.number 1seed ijima for me tomorrow in quarters."

As for Katie, that's quite a reverse in just a week disbeliefconfuse

After a doubles and singles match yesterday, Katie was complaining about blisters, which could go some to to explaining the turnaround in fortunes.

Katie played her doubles match so I'm guessing. Her blisters weren't too bad and it was just a bad day. Draw has really opened up with only 2 seeds left.

There were some good points to be had, and a loss like that on hardcourts is a little bit worrying. Particularly given the win on grass which I expected to be tougher.

She's not playing the chinese 25's, so hopefully she'll take a week or so off for some good training before her next tourney block. 40pts, given the past 18months, is not to be sniffed at!

One good week for Katie on grass and then back to what we've been used to this year. Emmers arguably her best tourny performance for a long long time.

Result of the week by FAR, particularly taking into account the scoreline! biggrin

QF: Emily Webley-Smith WR 383 beat (1) Kumiko Iijima (JPN) WR 214 by 1 & 3 biggrin

"I won 1+3 today :) perfect tennis till 5-0,then she upped it+i held strong.loved it out there.must be the pre-match routine thats working..."

That win will take Emily back into the WTA top 350 (and the GB top 10) after Indian Wells, unless anyone in the mix for that place scores enough points to dislodge her next week or in a 50K or above the week after.

Amazing from Emmers.
ITF drawsheet already predicting a SF defeat for her, but I suspect they may have to eat their words.
Has Emmers ever won a 25k?

No, she won a couple of 10Ks in 2009 but she has never reached a 25K singles Final. This is her third 25K singles semi. Oddly, she lost both of the other two to fellow Brits - 2 & 4 to Anne in Lagos in 2005 and 1 & 4 to Mel at Port Pirie in 2008.

So a career best tournament performance given whom she has beaten to date, at the tender age of 27.

Emily's SF match is listed on BET365. It should be on at around 1.30 am.

BET365 has it :  Ems  5/4   Fujiwara  4/7

Think I might have had it almost equal myself, not that that's a huge diversion.

Difficult to know how to take account of Fujiwara losing to Katie on grass in the QF last week :  2 - 6   6 - 2   6 - 1

Sadly the bookies had it right

SF: Emily Webley Smith WR 383 lost to [7] Rika Fujiwara WR 304 (JPN) 7-5 6-1

perhaps the excursions of the week caught up with her
