Drat ! For some reason McHale started to serve like Karlovic in the third set. We'll just have to be patient with regards Heather's entry into the top 100.
Although I knew the result, I've just now had a chance to read through it all. Quite a match and it most certainly went with the general thoughts that it would probably be a close one. Pretty absorbing for these following it I imagine, such a pity the final result.
Looks a long and attritional match, and as so often with Heather she certainly keeps fighting Yes, it is a bit disappointing to be ahead in both the second and third sets but it was just one break in each case in a match where serve was a bit more on top than in some women's matches we've seen lately. And the McHale break back to 4 - 3 in the third set was a hard fought game just like so many particularly on Heather's serve. I'd say she kept with it pretty well after that to take it to that final tiebreak.
It was interesting to note that in spite of McHale having one more service game, there were 123 points played on Heather's serve and just 105 on McHale's' serve, which ties in with how I was reading these last few pages, generally tigher games on Heather's serve but she fought through most of them to the extent that they ended up with 5 breaks apiece. As Maza said 118 ( 52% ) points to McHale overall as against 110 ( 48% ) to Heather, and to me it's really in these amounts of service points that a tale is told, with much more pressure for Heather to sustain. Yet she still got herself ahead in the match and could still have taken the final tiebreak.
Just looking at a couple of other things from the stats, Heather had a really good 76% first serve % but in actual fact was gaining no greater % points on first serve ( indeed slightly less, 56% won as against 57% won on second serve )
Anyway, it all clearly built to a massive letdown for Heather. I am guessing the length and ( I presume ) intensity of the match, combined with her being ahead but certainly not throwing it away and quite probably also I imagine who it was against, McHale being only 8 days older than her and the one 1992 girl ahead of her in the world rankings. It was big match for Heather in many ways, and it looks as if it all came out at the end, the girl really cares.
I am pleased though that from the tone of her last two tweets she is yes very disappointed but already looking to move on and push for greater things, whilst learning what she can from such a match.
"...buts its hard not to be gutted after a match like that! thank you for the support though :)"

It was noticeable that McHale's first service became increasingly dominant as the match progressed and is probably why the match slipped away at the end.
McHale is currently demolishing Kleybanova 6-1 3-0 in the next round, clearly she is playing some top quality tennis, but what an opportunity it would have been for Heather against the badly misfiring Russian player.
I suppose thats true, but what I was thinking is how the current scoreline should make Heather feel a lot better about her close loss, since McHale is clearly a star on the clay.

It certainly puts Heather's loss into context but moreso for me an opportunity missed. Kleybanova when off her game can be very poor, she lost to Sally Peers at the start of the year.
