RE: WK18 - ITF Cagnes Sur Mer ($100K + H)- (FRA) Clay

Morale boosting victory for Bally, whose wins at this level or higher on clay are as rare as Blackpool keeping a clean sheet in Premier League matches.

According to the Cagnes website the score was 6-4 1-6 6-2.

Heather plays fourth tomorrow against the qualifier Valeria Savinykh, who won the Johannesburg 100K event.

Results of other matches here will go a long way to determining whether Anne gets in to Wimbledon without a wildcard

Well done Bally, first win on the dirt this year if Im not mistaken

I think the first and second  set scores might have been the other around.

This was probably our best chance of round one success, so happy with that. Heather's match I reckon is 50/50, her opponent has come through qualifying and is generally on the up and at this stage in her career Hev is still a novice on this surface.

The tournament site suggests they were the other way round.

As for rare, as far as I can tell, her win against Cirstea in Strasbourg last year was her only previous win on clay in a WTA main draw.

L16: (6) Elena Baltacha WR 91 v Vesna Dolonts (RUS) WR 111

I was wondering how the Russian had got to WR 111 without me having heard of her - turns out it's the married name of the former Vesna Manasieva!

I think Heather's pal Sloane Stephens knocked out Savinykh early in Estoril - so it seems like although she won Jo'burg she may not be that comfortable on clay. (Of course she may just have been tired).

Err, isn't this an ITF event   confuse  Bally has won other Main Draw ITF matches, although actually not that many.

Doh!! ashamed (and I thought I'd learnt my lesson never to look for stats like that when in a rush!)

It does seem right though that the Cirstea win is her only WTA main draw clay court win  smile

Heather's match probably nearly over, fingers crossed she's done the business.

Very impressive Hev, and her next supposed opponent has been double bagelled (Kirsten Flipkens) so it's Maria-Elena Camerin for Hev, and clay is that lady's favourite surface so it won't be easy.

Nice win for Heather, but a big test next. Camerin won the title here two years ago and has just double bagelled the 5th seed. Bally is 5th on court tomorrow.

R2: CAMERIN, Maria-Elena (ITA) 123 v WATSON, Heather (GBR) 127

To be fair I don't think Flipkens is 100 % so don't read too much into that 6-0 6-0 scoreline, would probably make the match 50/50 at best for Heather.

Seems as though poor Anne can't buy a win of any kind at the moment:

R1:  Liga Dekmeijere & Vesna Dolonts (LAT/RUS) WR 252 defeated Anne Keothavong & Jessica Moore (AUS) WR 237 by 7-6(2) 6-2 disbelief

*  Time for a spot of revenge, Bally, methinks... please.gif
