RE: Week 20 - Roland Garros women's qualifying 2011

I'm going to look such a numpty if someone else did win a RG FQR match in the last 28 years without me noticing LOL

Nobody else (i.e. neither the LTA nor any of the journos who follow me) have repeated the stat yet, which suggests they aren't sure ... then again, none of them have contradicted it (yet) ...

Namigata
Amanmuradova
Baltacha
Foretz-Gacon
Craybas
Rus

i would be happy with the above.
amanmuradove would be my number one choice. heather beat her recently (though she was injured) and she isn't the best on this surface.

she also has some revenge to get on foretz gacon.

Excellent. Dont keep up on points system but if both Anne and Heather win a first round match at RG will they be in top 100.

Extremely likely, yes  ( with the big additions and subtractions for RG and the 2 week timeslot between this coming Monday's rankings and the post RG rankings, can't be sure )

But anyway,  the current WR 100 is on 676 points.

Winning R1 would take Anne to 725 points and Heather right behind on 724 points, which on the current list would be fighting for 96th place.

Despite the last stat he RT'd from me being a dud (once bitten, twice shy you'd think), Dicko of the Fail decided to use the 28 year stat.

I thought the BBC were then confirming it ... until Barry Flatman asked David Law for the name "And the last Brit woman to qualify in Paris....???" and he replied "You tell me. I was only 9. I'm just stealing lines from Dicko!"

ROFLMAO

If she draws Namigata, it will give a shot at revenge over McHale when she reaches R3 :)

Has she ever not been?!

Haha well I for one am glad that yobbish thug of yesteryear has been banished ;P

Absolutely fantastic to breeze through any grandslam qualies - to do it without dropping a set AND at the French is staggering at only 18!! Absolutely brilliant.

A nice draw would really be the cherry on the cake. Ammunmuradova has to be the best draw for R1, she would go crazy if Heather could just keep her on the move. When are they placed? Later today after all qualy matches are done I assume?

Well Heather was 18 when she started out in qualifying, but that process can age folk  wink

Her birthday was yesterday so she misses out on qualifying as an 18 yo by one day, bah !

Ah haha fair enough! Well as a teenager in that case :P

I think Jill Craybas would be a cracking draw too, with another qualifier or Hlavackova in R2 - nice enough! Then Masha R3, but lets not run before we can walk and all that jazz!

Sloane Stephens achieved that though, beating the #1 seed Anastasia Pivovarova 6-3 6-4. The #2 seed also lost, and #4 is into a 3rd set, so Heather could be the highest ranked qualifier. Good news for Bally.

Heather did win the 2nd tight match in Memphis, avenging losing the previous week in Midland  smile

F-G easily won their only ecounter on carpet in Quebec last year.

We really need Heather to qualify, and get rid of one of the many embarrassing records in British tennis. The last qualifier I think was Kate Brasher in 1983 (though we have had Lucky Losers, such as Katie O'Brien in 2009).

To avoid the need to find and check through nearly 3 decades of drawsheets on ITF just to make sure, do you have an independent source for this? I did a search for kate brasher roland garros 1983 and the first thing it came up with is one of my posts from 2009 on AM.com (post 85 on http://andy.murraytennisforums.com/showthread.php?24203-Brits-etc-in-Roland-Garros-Qualifying/page3), which as independent corroboration goes doesn't really work LOL with the posts on here further down the list.

I've got a note on file saying that Kate was the last Brit to qualify and I vaguely remember checking the drawsheets at the time (on ITF, it's a case of guessing who might have played that year then finding a link to the draw on their activity history - very tedious!) but stupidly I didn't make a note about how I checked or whether I got corroboration from someone else.

In fact (from the same 2009 research), Katie was the first Brit to get into the main draw at RG after playing qualifying (i.e. as a Q or LL) since 1988 (when Clare Wood got in as a lucky loser) and it was also the first time for 17 years that we had more than two women in the main draw. It was Elena who missed out that year (though like Katie, she was one of the four highest-ranked FQR losers) - Anne and Mel (!) were the DAs.

Although it's a bit late now, though thankfully relevant, I researched this 2 years ago at the time you mention and posted a few stats here ( http://britishtennis.activeboard.com/t27953239/week-20-womens-roland-garros-qualifying/?page=16&sort=oldestFirst&r=928286 )

Essentially I looked through the drawsheets from 1994 backwards on Wikipedia
