Brilliant news to come home to! I had to go out before the match had even started - I was checking the OOP for ages hoping to catch a bit of it. I still have never seen her play, but no doubt I am going to get the opportunity soon
There was a lovely photo of Hev on the back page of today's Times (+ a report by OEM inside) & there's a round-up of sorts on the Beeb site, Mad, if that's any consolation. I wasn't even in the country yesterday & so totally dependent on BBC World...
My hope & prediction is two of the three reach the second round and I think it will be Bally and Hev.....I think those odds on Bally are amazing and thankfully she has been given an extra day to recover with the Tue start....
OOoooo......I just love it when I am right.....although in hindsight I wish I had hoped that all three would make it.....if only I had put a wager on too.....but not sure if you can bet on such things over here......
Again I have to say Bally is worth a bet, because I would make her favourite against King. King apparently benefited from a poor performance from Cibulkova in her first round match so I might put a little bit on for a win through to round 3. I think the bookies are underestimating Bally based upon previous form shown on clay. However she has shown this year with the right preparation and application she can be effective on this surface. Heather I feel will struggle against Kanepi unless 1. Kanepi is below par 2. She can step it up from her performance in the first round.
3rd on Court 3 for Ms Watson tomorrow; 2nd on Court 6 for Ms Baltacha. (And only the best for Mr Murray). Some curious things, though. Ljubicic/Querrey on 7?
The latest odds imply the Brits' chances today are:
Bally 45% Hev 24%
Relevant "last times" for Brits at RG that are potential targets today - E&OE (I have 1970s/early 80s ITF pages swimming in front of my eyes after this LOL) - and the chances of them happening based on the bookies' odds (Muzz is 95%):
1992 (19 years ago) - the last time a GB woman reached R3 (Jo Durie, who went out at that stage - Sara Gomer reached R2 and Monique Javer R1 that year too) - 58%
1984 (27 years ago) - the last time we had 3 Brits in R2 in men's and women's singles combined - 100% (i.e. already achieved)
1983 (28 years ago) - the last time 2 GB women reached R3 (Jo Durie, who went on to make the semis, and Anne Hobbs, who reached R4) - 11%
1982 (29 years ago) - the last time we had both a man and a woman in R3 (John Lloyd & Virginia Wade, though the latter had a bye in R1 because it was only a 96 draw) - 55%, would also equal the second 1980 feat below
1980 (31 years ago) - the last time we had 3 Brits in the last 32 (Buster Mottram reached R3, Virginia Wade reached R3 and Anne Hobbs reached R2 - but that was the L32 at the time because there were only 64 players in the women's draw) - 10%, would also equal 1972 below
1980 (again) - the last time both a GB man and a GB woman got back to back singles wins in the RG main draw - 55%
1972 (39 years ago) - the last time 3 Brits won back to back singles matches in the RG main draw (John de Mendoza reached R3, Virginia Wade and Corinne Molesworth reached the QFs) - 10%
