Ah ah, * 1 - 5, do think that's it now. If she had broken there still would have had a sniff, though given her seeming lack of general energy would still have been doubtful.
I agree train ahead of a tournament in the heat, but don't waste energy during a tournament practising in the heat, just madness.
Absolutely
She probably felt after her time out that she needed as much on court time as she could get. I can understand that feeling, but I agree that it makes no sense.

A sad end. I was very surprised this all went pear shaped. Was feeling very confident hev would take this match. She will be gutted, of course. Wonder if she will still play dubs with Anne. NOT staying up for that, sorry !
Commentator repeating Steven's stat about 3 setters this year, saying that's her 6th successive such loss, but the folowing "questions have to be asked about her mental state" is really OTT to my mind. We have commented quite a lot in the past about her seeming mental strength and certainly match toughness and I really don't think she has generally lost that in the course of matches, although yes she has a few times been emotional after matches. I do think we had particular circumstances here
I think it was clear that the heat had a lot to do with this, not just really wilting at the end but how she reacted when things didn't go well re BPs and eventually losing the 2nd set.
I am sure she will have learned some lessons, but unfortunately those will have come in the course of losing a very winnable 2nd round match

It was a bit freaky hearing the commentator say that - I found myself wondering if he was reading my tweets or the forum, not because I didn't think he'd have been able to come up with that stat himself but because he dealt with the Estoril win by retirement so similarly to the way I did - commentators don't tend to go to the trouble of qualifying stats like that in my experience. Then I thought, well it's not that hard to find, maybe he even said it earlier, before I started watching again.
I agree that his inference that Hev has a mental block about 3rd sets was very OTT - she may have lost that feeling of near-invincibility she must have had last year any time a match went to 3 sets, but I don't believe for a moment that she now thinks "this is a 3rd set, I'm bound to lose" - she doesn't play like she believes that, for a start.
The heat must have had an effect here - it's bound to make it harder to recover when things go wrong and to make you more irritable - Dubois broke her own racket at one point too, though apparently played on with it for a point or two to avoid the penalty. LOL
