That's two disappointing tournaments in a row for Bally with losses to lower-ranked players - highly unusual these days.
It also means that since she beat Schiavone in R2 in Istanbul last year, her record in main tour events (including slams) that she has got into as a direct entrant is:
- a very creditable Won 13 Lost 3 in R1
- Won 0 Lost 13 (or 12 if you exclude the w/o) in R2
You can look at this in a few different ways:
1) She tends to consistently win the matches she should win but comes up short against higher-ranked players
2) If she starts to find a way to beat higher-ranked players again, her ranking could start rising quickly
3) She could be in deep trouble if her run of regularly avoiding seeds in R1 ends and she gets a run of R1 draws against seeds instead, especially in slams
Of course, since she was actually seeded herself here, it seemed like a golden opportunity to break the run of R2 losses, but Razzano was a top 20 player less than 2 years ago so may be heavily under-ranked for some reason I'm not aware of.

The illness and then sudden death of her husband/coach mainly.

A sad reason I was aware of but had forgotten that was Razzano.

In case anybody had forgotten or was unaware Hev is likely to be on court within the next hour against a Canadian girl who could be tricky. Live feed through Bet365.
Typical start to a set from Heather, going an early break down and quickly recovering to go ahead. A pattern I've noticed to the extent that I put a bit of money on her at 0-2 and it's already looking like a good investment
