Q2: KEOTHAVONG, Anne (GBR) 98 v DANIILIDOU, Eleni (GRE) 93
They have played three times before with Eleni winning on grass in 2006 and Anne winning on hard courts in 2001 and 2010. Anne's win in 2010 was 6-1 6-1.
If Olga had been in form she would have been clear favourite, but with 5 consecutive losses there appeared to be a realistic possibility of a win for Bally, so disappointing that she couldn't get close.
Great win for Anne after losing in straight sets to Brianti less than 3 weeks ago but another absolute shocker from Bally (at least by the higher standards we have come to expect over the last year or two)

Hmm, not really what I expected to read from yesterday.
Laura's loss I did I'm afraid expect. As was said Sanchez's ranking and similarly high race position is no accident. Laura played very well in the Hopman Cup, but I don't think Sanchez was at her best. To me a relatively comfortable Sanchez win is not something to be at all concerned about, much as Laura would of course like to have been closer.
Anne's win a bit unexpected, just her 4th win against a top 100 player this year. Given how much quite negative comment she gets on her form, on the face of it is rather surprisng she is still a top 100 player, both in rankings and the race. I had a little look at where her points have come from, which explains much : a total of 340 points have come from 3 tournaments - Aus Open ( highest opponent beaten WR 164 ), Wimbledon and Johannesburg 100K ( noone beaten in top 200 in either of these ). So she has flourished and got big points when some opportunities presented, which has held her ranking up. With generally closer to her best form outwith these tornaments, she could of been a fair bit higher. Would be good if this win heralded some better form.
Elena's loss - very disappointing. It is a pity to see her form seeming to be taling off a bit as it did last year. We have seen so often how she certainly doesn't lack commitment and fight, and I worry a bit whether there are medical issues making things tougher towards the end of a long season.
