I think Laura has had trouble with younger players than herself in the past, though that should be no excuse, but hey at least she's through.
Go Naomi and Laura in FQR !
I think Laura is unbeaten so far in her career against players younger than herself (although I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong). She was mighty close to losing that record today though.
It was pretty tense stuff following the scores, so I'm not sure how ready I will be for the final round later today, let alone Laura and Naomi.
It does seem to be a problem Laura has in games where she is not in top form that she doesn't make enough of an impression on her opponents serve. In most women's matches, being broken only once in the first two sets would lead to a comfortable win, but Laura needed to do that well on serve just to stay in contention.

Foretz Gacon is 30 years old and just won 7-5 in the 3rd so lets hope Naomi can capitalize on that.
Gee, she's ancient
Sorry, just makes me feel even older than I am when players and athletes are considered old when they reach 30. Seriously I'd say 7 - 5 in the 3rd may be helpful, but not particularly because she's 30.
Don't know what to make of all that. Naomi winning was absolutely brilliant, as for Laura looks to be several factors at work here. Dominated the first part of the match with numerous winners and her big serve which had more juice on it than of late. Then slowly but surely the power on her first serve dropped and in the second set Townsend dominated the winners stat. The end of the third set then reverted back to what had happened at the start of the match, Laura hitting winner after winner. You would have to think that at the back of her mind Laura was playing the match knowing she had another match to play whereas for the American girl this was her final, so was trying to conserve a little energy.
Anyway both matches later on have been put back to 3.30 local time at the earliest.
Good battling from both - unfortunate given the nature of the matches that the US Open has opted to force players to play twice in a day. That's something I cannot remember happening in any of the Slams in the 15 years I've been following them closely (though there have been instances of playing 1 and a bit matches) - and doesn't seem in spirit with providing optimum playing conditions for all where possible in slams.
I don't recall Laura losing to a younger player in a women's match, but then she hasn't met many. However, she has played poorly in junior slams after good performances in the senior event several times recently which is probably what leads to that overall impression.
I just hope Hurriance Irene clears off quickly enough on Monday that Laura isn't playing R1 matches in gale force winds (hoping that she's playing them at all).
I've been out all day. Just read through the posts. Nice to come home to the news without having to share the nervous moments! Let's hope they can get the job done this evening.

Basically ridiculous. But arranging things in the best way for players has often not been that uppermost in the US authorities minds even at the latter stages of the main draw.

I assumed it was because originally the courts were booked for Kids day Saturday + now the anticipated Hurricane will prevent any play at all on Saturday and maybe Sunday.
This hurricane looks like it will be messy....obviously not good for the players to play twice in a day esp as Zhang had an easier match....but has to be done....I think New York will shut down for potions of Sat & Sun so players can go somewhere else if they lose today and the ones that win can get shelter and know that they are playing for sure on Monday/Tue etc....
Who knows where Irene will roam....but better to be done with the qualifying today.
