Frustrating because she was close enough to win that match. Simply didn't take her chances (1/12 bps) and didn't serve as well as she needed to. Plenty of aces but 47% first serve in play is far too low for her.
When do they announce where the qualifiers will be placed?
It should be in the next couple of hours - qualifying is almost over.
Anyway, what an exciting day! I've been having DNS problems since late-afternoon, which means I wasn't able to load web pages (tweetdeck still worked as, fortunately, did the livescores as long as I didn't close down the page - thankfully, I had left it open after the qr2 matches ended buto I haven't dared to reboot until now in case it didn't sort the problem out - it kind of has, which i why I can post here now but still very slow) so any stats are from memory because I haven't been able to check them properly, but I'm virtually certain this is:
- the first time since 1997 (Sam Smith) that a British woman has qualified for the USO main draw
- the first time since 1992 (DAs for Durie, Gomer & Javer plus Wood qualifying) that we have had 4 British women in the US Open main draw
Such a pity that Naomi wasn't quite able to make it 5, but she's been very impressive this week and barring a freaky combination of events, she should have a place in the top 200 as a consolation prize - definitely a big new career high whatever happens.
As for Laura, she had a decent draw obviously but she certainly fought when she had to in QR2 and after getting through such a long match, beating a much fresher opponent in straight sets just a few hours later is very impressive indeed.
