Hard luck for Bally, so close to getting the win and then to have to retire. The last time she actually drew a seed for her first match, was Li Na, the no 7 seed in Eastbourne in June 2010, when she won on a retirement. This time she loses to the no 7 seed, Cibulkova, on a retirament. Today's little oddity

I'd forgotten about Bally's run of avoiding seeds in the first round. It ended at 16 months then which she can't really complain about.
"Had to retire against Cibulkova. My back has been a bit tight this week, probably because this is my first tournament in a while, and I was concerned I was going to make it worse if I kept playing. I hate having to retire but you need to be 100% against someone as good as her. It's a shame because it was actually a really good match."
