It's a big plus in Fed Cup zonal groups to be able to share the load round 3 or 4 players. Teams reliant on 2 players often find that there's a day when one of them is fatigued or can't play. What's unclear is whether Peer's struggle today and quick defeat will give her the chance to recover more for tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if Heather is offered the second singles slot instead of Anne tomorrow, which both should be capable of winning, partly with a view to the long-term and partly so Judy can gauge better who to throw in to Saturday's decider if we make it.
I was wondering about Heather too, but more for the immediate task of winning the tie vs Israel.
Anne and Glushko have the same win / loss records here and quite similar scores. OK, I'd generally take Anne to win. and she may be the fresher tomorrow, but Glushko is at home and I am not sure about Anne's form here. Heather to me could be the better bet. Clearly Judy will have a much greater feel for their respective forms.
I partly also see the case for giving Heather the match in advance of Saturday, but really just if it looks a reasonable selection call for Friday. One only has to look back to last year for the dangers of selection not based on immediate business.
In this instance, I couldn't care less about the long-term. This is here, 2012, and to me 2012 Fed Cup is all that matters. Heather will have plenty other big matches without needing 2012 Fed Cup singles experience.
