RE: Week 2 - WTA ($220K) Hobart, Australia - Hard

Good stuff Hev but more difficult than needs be. Anyone read the Robson article on the Aussie open Home page? Her season goal is to make top 60 to qualify for Olympics. Ambitious much?

The wind today made it a bit of a lottery, so I wouldn't read too much into how close Hev's match was.

As for Laura, top 60 is ambitious, but 427 of her 501 points were gained in the second half of last year - if she could match that in the first 5 and a bit months of this year, that would take her to around WR 80 and it would need around 150 points more to get her to that top 60 goal..

Ah yeah I caught a small bit of the match but the stream quality was dissapointly low! A win is a win, Im certainly not complaining.

I guess its more achievable than I first thought. Sorry I should have posted the link:

Laura seems very well trained at keeping her cards close to her chest as she typically gives away very little in regards to her plan. Yes, she will play more WTA but that much was obvious. I hope she gets a nicer balance between big events and smaller ones. Yes the big ones are very exciting but it would be nice to see her start carving through some of the smaller ones too.

Yes, great news to wake up to this morning. Pleased to see she gritted it out.

Pironkova will be tough, ranked 46. It would, according to the rankings, be Heather's best ever win if she could do it. But Steven on bt said Heather has already beaten her before once (but has lost comfortably to her as well).

My only worry is that the almost 3 hour match might have taken out a little too much today.

What time is 11am local time over here? I might stay up for a bit if there is a stream.

Pironkova has points to come off tomorrow and is predicted by TBE to drop to 48, so it would only equal her career best, not beat it.

11am in Tasmania is midnight here, but Heather is 2nd on court.

Interesting article, mainly to get an update of where Laura is fitness wise. Hopefully she will be fully ready by Wednesday.

The article also mentions that qualies will have a live stream in which case there should be a decent chance Laura will be on a court with a stream.

The match before Heather's has just finished so she should be on soon.

Not a good start from Heather. Broken straight away. Plenty of running about the court, chasing balls.

Currently 0-2

Holds to 15. 1-2*

1-2*

Lucky netcord
P ue forehand net 0-30

H breaks back for *2-2

2 aces then a df for 40-40. Then broken for 2-3* as P dominant

H needs to do more than just keep the ball in court as TP too good at finding the spaces. Nice to see H attacking for 15-30. A df makes 15-40 and she breaks back for *3-3

Some good serves down the T. P goes for a low percentage fh dtl but misses for 40-15 then loses a super rally but holds for 4-3*. H's ball placement much better now. Fewer midcourt opportunities for P

P rushes to 40-0 but H soon facing a 2nd serve at 40-30 only to waste the opportunity. *4-4

H holds to love as TP's forehand can't find the target. Wind really blowing now. 5-4*

H a bit careless as she rather gifts TP an easy hold to love *5-5

H 30-0 then loses ridiculously long rally for 30-40. 2nd serve and backhand error costing her the break 5-6*

H has several chances to pass but P volley wins the first point. Super H lob for 15-15. P bh ue then P horrible smash out for 15-40. H breaks back with impressive fhs crosscourt forcing the error 6-6

P bh ue 2-0* H nets a fh after long rally *2-1. Again good angles from H before P's fh is long *3-1. H fh cc causing P trouble 4-1* Weak 2nd serve from P but H nets the return 4-2* Looked like a pass winner from P followed by a fh dtl winner *4-4 Careless fh ue wide from H 4-5* Bh ue long from H 4-6* Deep bh from H forces P to net a bh *5-6 Unret 1st serve down the t for *6-6. H fh ue long for 6-7* P wastes huge chance with poor overhead then loses point for *7-7 P bh ue 8-7 then P bh winner after H passive 8-8. P fh winner 8-9* Wind making life difficult. P screams as she can't control a fh with the ball seemingly moving all over the place in the breeze 9-9* H loses next point in similar circumstances *9-10. H aggressive fh *10-10 H bh wide 10-11* P takes the set with some dominant hitting, finishing with an aggressive bh that H reaches but can't keep in court.

6-7

Decent display from H so far. Shame she was passive on her set point opportunity.
