Is it just me or is this a strange choice? Surely Anne would be more likely to get more matches under her belt at the weaker Hobart event? Especially as the cut off for the main draw here seem to be about WR24!

Not particularly. Kind of choice players very often have to make, although I see the point re prep matches before the first Slam. She did of course play last week in the Auckland WTA tour tournament and got a couple of matches, so she was entered both the weeks before the Aussie Open.
I guess she's made no different choice from an absolute host of quite similarly ranked women, who will also be going on to the Aussie Open, looking at the Sydney qualifying draw.
Who knows what other reasons, eg maybe surface, were involved too.

QR1: (q11) Anne Keothavong WR 72 lost to Michaëlla Krajicek (NED) WR 93 (CH 30 in 2008) by 2-6 6-2 7-5
Very close, but during that final set, Krajicek lost just 4/28 points on serve, so must have been holding much more easily throught than Anne, who lost 16/39.

Anne playing OK at the start of the year, but still a tad disappointed given her form at the end of last year.
Indoor courts have always been a fave for Anne though. She has never been hugely successful at beginning of the year. Apart from Auckland semis a few years back and qualifying and winning first round of Oz Open last year. The first time she actually qualified for a Slam I believe. Interesting to see that she is down for Pattaya this year and not Memphis (indoors) where she has reached the semis twice. Seems to be trying a lot of new things this year. I really hope she gets up to around WR 60 and we see her at the Olympics. No one deserves it more.
